Noise changes what "audible" means on a production floor

OSHA caps 8-hour noise exposure at 90 dBA. OSHA's own guidance notes that speech becomes hard to hear above roughly 85 dBA. Grinding, welding and machining operations routinely reach or exceed that range, with some measured as high as 108 to 115 dBA.

The device implication

A standard AED's voice prompts can be genuinely masked by ambient machinery noise at or near OSHA's own legal ceiling. Devices with visual guidance alongside audio prompts hold up better here than an audio-only design.

OSHA obligation: no exemption, unlike farms

General Duty Clause

Employers must provide a workplace free from recognized hazards likely to cause death or serious harm. No AED-specific mandate exists, but this clause remains a live exposure.

29 CFR 1910.151

Requires adequate first aid availability, and trained personnel where EMS is not in near proximity.

No small-facility carve-out

Unlike small farms, which carry a specific OSHA exemption, manufacturing facilities of any size are fully within general industry OSHA coverage.

This is not legal advice. Confirm any state-specific requirement directly.

How many AEDs your facility actually needs

The AHA's real published standard is a time target, not a square-footage formula: a device should be retrievable and a shock deliverable within roughly 3 minutes of collapse.

Industry planning sources translate that into rough coverage estimates ranging from about 20,000 to 100,000 sq ft per device, depending on layout and obstacles. That range is wide because it genuinely depends on your floor plan, not a single formula.

ScenarioCoverage note
Multi-level production areasAdditional device per floor or mezzanine level
Detached buildings, loading docks, yardsEach needs its own dedicated coverage, not reach from an indoor unit
Overnight or skeleton-crew shiftsFewer staff spread across the same floor plate increases real response time
Highest-risk zones (production floor itself)Prioritize over square-footage-even distribution

Call (855) 286-6384 with your floor plan and shift pattern for a specific placement recommendation.

Frequently asked questions

Are AEDs required in manufacturing plants in the US?

No federal OSHA standard mandates AEDs specifically. The General Duty Clause and 29 CFR 1910.151 still apply, and some states impose their own requirements.

Manufacturing carries no exemption comparable to the small-farm carve-out; general industry coverage applies regardless of size.

What is the best AED for an industrial environment?

Prioritize a rugged, high IP-rated device with visual guidance alongside audio prompts, given documented factory-floor noise levels. See our AED CPR feedback comparison for which models offer visual feedback.

How many AEDs are needed for a large manufacturing facility?

Plan around a 3-minute retrieval and response target, the AHA's actual published benchmark, rather than a fixed square-footage number.

Multi-level areas, detached buildings and overnight shifts each need their own coverage consideration. Call (855) 286-6384 for a floor-plan-specific recommendation.

What should be included in an industrial AED package?

A rugged AED, alarmed high-visibility cabinet, adult and pediatric pad path, spare battery and pads, a rescue kit, clear signage, and the prescription. See the checklist above.

Does OSHA require AED training for manufacturing employees?

No AED-specific training mandate exists. General Duty Clause exposure and first-aid availability under 1910.151 still apply, and trained responders strengthen your position regardless.

What is the maintenance schedule for factory AEDs?

Check pads and battery on a fixed schedule and after any actual use. Dust, heat and vibration can accelerate wear versus a climate-controlled office.

Exact intervals vary by brand and are listed on each product page.
