About Cardiac Science and the Powerheart line
Cardiac Science Corporation, now part of ZOLL Medical, has manufactured the Powerheart family of AEDs since the late 1990s. Powerheart AEDs are favored by Fortune 500 companies, federal agencies, fire and EMS departments, K-12 school districts, places of worship, and the U.S. military for one reason: they are built to be ready when an untrained bystander grabs them off the wall and a life depends on the next thirty seconds.

Three patented technologies set Powerheart apart from every other AED brand.
Rescue Ready self-testing
Each Powerheart unit runs daily, weekly, and monthly self-tests on the battery, defibrillation pads, internal circuitry, and high-voltage capacitor. The global Powerheart fleet logs more than 4,100 collective hours of Rescue Ready diagnostics every single day.
STAR biphasic variable escalating energy
Unlike fixed-energy AEDs, the STAR (Self-Compensating Output Pulse) algorithm measures the patient's chest impedance and customizes the shock waveform. If the first shock fails, the AED escalates energy automatically rather than repeating the same dose.
RHYTHMx ECG analysis
The Powerheart's analysis algorithm filters noise from the ECG signal and classifies rhythms as shockable or non-shockable with hospital-grade accuracy, minimizing unnecessary shocks and missed shockable rhythms.

Why buyers choose Cardiac Science over other AED brands
Powerheart AEDs compete head-to-head with Philips HeartStart, ZOLL AED Plus, HeartSine Samaritan PAD, and Physio-Control LIFEPAK. The features that decide most purchase decisions in favor of Cardiac Science:
The G5's 8-year warranty (after registration) is the longest in the AED category. G3 Plus and G3 Pro both carry 7 years.
Powerheart actually charges and discharges the high-voltage capacitor at full energy on the monthly test. That is why the global fleet logs 4,100+ self-test hours daily.
STAR biphasic measures patient impedance and customizes each shock. If the first shock fails, the AED escalates energy rather than repeating the same dose.
For hotels, retail, and churches where rescuers are unlikely to be trained, the G5 fully automatic delivers the shock without requiring the rescuer to press a button.
English and Spanish prompts in the same unit, switchable mid-rescue. Right for diverse workplaces, public venues, and any community with non-English-first speakers.
G3 Plus and G3 Pro share wall-cabinet footprints and mounting brackets. Upgrading or expanding an existing G3 fleet is straightforward, no new cabinets required.

Frequently asked questions about Cardiac Science AEDs
QHow long do Cardiac Science AED batteries last?
The Powerheart G5 IntelliSense lithium battery (XBTAED001A) carries a 4-year manufacturer operational guarantee from the date of installation, with a shelf life of up to 5 years before installation. It can deliver up to 500 shocks and holds a 9-shock reserve after the low-battery warning. The G3 Plus and G3 Pro batteries also carry a 4-year guarantee. All Cardiac Science batteries are non-rechargeable, single-use lithium packs.
QHow long do Cardiac Science defibrillation pads last?
Cardiac Science adult and pediatric defibrillation pads have a 2-year shelf life from manufacture. The expiration date is printed on the exterior of the pad packaging. Pads are single-use after rescue and must be replaced after each deployment. We recommend keeping at least one spare set on hand for every Powerheart AED in service.
QWhat is the warranty on a Cardiac Science Powerheart AED?
The Powerheart G5 carries an 8-year manufacturer warranty (6 years standard plus 2 additional years after registration with ZOLL/Cardiac Science). The Powerheart G3 Plus and G3 Pro both carry a 7-year manufacturer warranty, among the longest warranty terms in the AED industry.
QWhat is the difference between the G3 Plus, G3 Pro, and G5?
The G3 Plus is the original semi-automatic public access Powerheart, ideal for general workplace and community deployments. The G3 Pro adds 3-lead ECG cardiac monitoring and a manual override mode for trained EMS, fire, and clinical responders. The G5 is the flagship with fully automatic shock option, dual-language voice prompts (English/Spanish), IP55 rating, optional IntelliSense CPR feedback, and the longest warranty at 8 years.
QAre Cardiac Science AEDs FDA approved?
Yes. The Powerheart G3 Plus, G3 Pro, and G5 all originally received FDA Premarket Approval (PMA) and remain fully compliant with current FDA guidance. The Powerheart G5 was the first FDA-approved AED to combine fully automatic shock delivery, dual-language prompts, and variable escalating energy in a single unit.
QAre these AEDs compatible with my current G3 wall cabinets?
The Powerheart G3 Plus and G3 Pro share the same physical footprint and mounting bracket pattern, so existing G3 wall cabinets accept either unit without modification. The Powerheart G5 has a slightly different profile and is best paired with a G5-specific or Cardiac Science standard size cabinet. If you are upgrading from a G3 to a G5, contact our team and we will confirm compatibility or recommend the right replacement.
QCan a Cardiac Science AED be used by someone who isn't medically trained?
Yes. RescueCoach voice and text prompts walk the rescuer through every step. The G5 fully automatic option removes even the shock-button decision: the AED delivers the shock when one is needed, and the bystander only needs to apply the pads and follow the voice. AED training is strongly recommended but is not required to operate the device.
QWhat is the lead time for shipping to my U.S. location?
Orders placed by 3:00 PM EST on a business day typically ship the same day from a U.S. warehouse via FedEx or UPS Ground. Standard delivery is 2 to 5 business days within the contiguous U.S. Alaska and Hawaii may require additional fees and transit time. Expedited shipping is available on request, call (855) 286-6384 to arrange.
QAre bulk discounts available for multi-unit purchases?
Yes. Total AEDs offers volume pricing on multi-unit orders for school districts, multi-site businesses, hospital systems, and government agencies. Bulk discounts also apply to combined orders of AEDs, cabinets, signage, and AED management programs. Email [email protected] or call (855) 286-6384 with your unit count and configuration for a custom quote.
QDo I need a prescription to buy a Cardiac Science AED?
Yes. All Cardiac Science Powerheart AEDs require a medical prescription / physician's authorization to purchase. Total AEDs includes the required prescription with every order at no additional cost.
QWhat is the IP55 rating on the Powerheart G5?
IP55 certifies the G5 against dust ingress and against water jets sprayed from any direction. In practice, the G5 withstands dusty industrial environments, light splash and rain, and accidental moisture contact during outdoor sporting events, on factory floors, and in maintenance areas. It is not rated for full submersion.
