Aed Packages for Farmers

Most small farms are specifically exempt from OSHA enforcement entirely, under a federal rider renewed every year since 1976. If you run a typical family operation, compliance is probably not the reason to buy an AED. The risk on your land is the reason.

Published research comparing farmland cardiac arrests to other outdoor workplaces found an older population at risk, longer EMS response times, and measurably lower AED availability than almost any other work setting.

Before you order a HeartSine unit Some HeartSine samaritan PAD devices are covered by an active Stryker recall. Check your serial number and read current guidance on our AED safety notices page.

What the data actually shows on farmland cardiac arrests

Published research comparing farmland out-of-hospital cardiac arrests to other outdoor workplaces found a strikingly different risk picture.

In one analysis, 85.9% of farmland cardiac arrest patients were 60 or older, compared to 34% in other outdoor work settings.

Farmland cardiac arrests were also more frequent than in other outdoor workplaces, and showed lower bystander CPR rates, fewer shockable rhythms, and more limited access to a defibrillator on site.

The honest read on outcomes

Raw survival was substantially lower in farmland cardiac arrests than in other outdoor workplaces. But once researchers adjusted for age, bystander CPR, AED availability and response time, farmland location itself was not an independent factor.

That is the useful part. The outcome gap is explained by specific, addressable factors, and AED availability is one the data identifies directly. It is also the one you can act on today.

Do farmers need an AED for OSHA compliance?

For most small farms, the honest answer is no, because most small farms are not subject to OSHA enforcement at all.

A federal appropriations rider, renewed every year since 1976, exempts farming operations from all OSHA enforcement if they employ 10 or fewer employees and have not maintained a temporary labor camp in the prior 12 months.

Immediate family members do not count toward that total.

Where the exemption stops applying

Exceeding 10 employees at any point in the past year removes the exemption. Maintaining a temporary labor camp removes it regardless of headcount.

Post-harvest food manufacturing is also treated separately. Milling grain into flour, pressing cider, or packaging produce into finished goods is food manufacturing, not farming, even on an otherwise-exempt operation.

That means the case for an AED on most farms has nothing to do with a compliance checkbox. It rests on the risk profile above and the response-time reality below.

Why response time is the real problem

EMS response and transport times were significantly longer for farmland emergencies than for other outdoor workplaces in the same research.

General rural EMS data shows a similar pattern: meaningfully longer transport times and a higher rate of severe emergencies than urban EMS.

1
Distance from the nearest station

Rural ambulance coverage often means one unit serving a wide area, not a station a few minutes from every field.

2
Finding the patient

A collapse in a back field, a grain bin, or a machine shed takes longer to locate and reach than a collapse in an office lobby.

3
Working alone

Many farm tasks are performed solo. The person best placed to respond in the first minutes is often the only other adult on the property, if anyone.

What actually holds up in a dusty, hot, vibrating environment

Devices vary meaningfully in dust and water resistance, and that is a real purchasing factor here in a way it rarely is on an office wall.

Philips FRxIP55Industry-standard rugged tier
Philips OnSite / HomeIP21Drip protection only, not suited to a shop or barn
IP rating and drop resistance are different specs

The IP rating tells you about dust and water. It does not by itself tell you how a case handles a drop off a truck bed or sustained vibration on a tractor or ATV. Confirm that separately per model before mounting one in a vehicle.

Store the unit indoors where possible, in a wall cabinet rather than an open shelf, and check pads and battery on a fixed schedule, since heat and dust accelerate wear faster than a climate-controlled office. See our full AED IP ratings comparison.

Recurring costs to plan for

Pads and batteries expire on fixed schedules regardless of how often the device is used, and every brand differs. Replace pads immediately after any use, regardless of remaining shelf life.

Exact intervals and current prices are listed on each product page rather than repeated here, since they vary by brand and change over time: Defibtech Lifeline AED Value Package, HeartSine samaritan PAD AED Value Package, or ZOLL AED Plus Value Packages.

Training for farm workers and family

Every AED we sell is built for untrained responders, with voice guidance through each step. Formal CPR and AED training still improves outcomes, particularly for anyone likely to be first on scene.

For a working farm with multiple family members, hired hands, or seasonal workers, a documented program, who is trained, where devices are located, and a maintenance schedule, matters more than for a single-person operation. See AED program management.

Funding options worth checking

The Rural Access to Emergency Devices (RAED) Grant Program, administered through the federal Health Resources and Services Administration, funds AED purchase and BLS/AED training specifically for rural community partnerships.

It is a rural-community program rather than a farm-exclusive one, so eligibility depends on the specific partnership structure. Confirm current eligibility and application windows directly with the program.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best AED for a farm or ranch?

Look for the highest dust and water resistance available, simple voice-guided operation, and confirmed durability for how it will actually be stored, in a vehicle, shop, or outbuilding.

See our full AED IP ratings comparison for a brand-by-brand breakdown, or call (855) 286-6384 to discuss your specific setup.

Do farmers need an AED on-site for OSHA compliance?

Most do not, because most small farms are exempt from OSHA enforcement entirely. A federal rider exempts farming operations with 10 or fewer employees and no temporary labor camp in the past 12 months.

If your operation exceeds that threshold, or includes post-harvest food manufacturing, the exemption may not apply. Confirm your specific status with your own advisor.

How do I maintain an AED in a dusty farm environment?

Choose a device with a high IP rating for dust and water resistance, store it in a wall cabinet rather than an open shelf, and check pads and battery on a fixed schedule rather than waiting for a self-test alert.

Heat and dust accelerate wear faster than in a climate-controlled office, so err toward checking more often.

Is the carrying case rugged enough for a tractor or ATV?

IP rating covers dust and water resistance, not vibration or drop resistance, which are separate specifications. We have not independently verified vibration ratings for every case in this catalog.

Call (855) 286-6384 with your specific mounting plan and we will confirm what a given case is actually rated for before you order.

Are there recurring costs for pads and batteries?

Yes. Pads and batteries expire on fixed schedules regardless of use, and intervals vary by brand. Replace pads immediately after any actual use, regardless of remaining shelf life.

Exact intervals and current prices are listed on each product page.
