Why AED battery replacement matters

AED batteries are not household batteries. They are purpose-designed lithium power cells calibrated to the specific energy demands of a single AED model. Using the wrong battery or an off-brand substitute can void your warranty, trigger false self-test failures, and in worst-case scenarios deliver an incorrectly powered shock.

Every AED depends on its battery to power daily, weekly, and monthly self-tests and to charge the high-voltage capacitor that delivers the defibrillation shock. A battery that is expired, depleted, or incompatible will trigger a fault indicator, fail the self-test, and leave the device unable to shock during a sudden cardiac arrest emergency.

The practical consequences of a missed replacement:

Device failure during rescue

A dead battery is the most common reason an AED fails when needed most. Most AEDs emit a beep or show a red indicator when low, but without active program management, that warning goes unheard until someone physically checks the device.

Non-compliance and liability exposure

Most state PAD laws and OSHA workplace safety guidelines require AEDs to be maintained in a "state of readiness." An AED with an expired or depleted battery is technically non-compliant and exposes the organization to liability.

Unnecessary cost

Battery replacement is the most cost-effective form of AED maintenance. Replacing a battery on schedule costs a fraction of a service call, a warranty claim, or the legal and human cost of a failed rescue.

Shop AED batteries by brand

Use the brand sections below to jump directly to the battery that fits your AED. Always confirm the model number printed on your AED's rear label before ordering.

ZOLL AED batteries

For ZOLL AED Plus, AED 3, and AED Pro. The AED Plus uniquely runs on 10 standard consumer lithium batteries (the only AED on the market using off-the-shelf retail batteries) with a 5-year standby life. The AED 3 uses a smart non-rechargeable lithium battery with on-screen power-level reporting. The SurePower rechargeable lithium-ion battery is available for high-volume clinical environments.

  • ZOLL AED 3 Non-Rechargeable Lithium Battery
  • ZOLL AED Pro Non-Rechargeable Lithium Battery
  • ZOLL SurePower Rechargeable Lithium Ion Battery

Cardiac Science Powerheart batteries

For Powerheart G5 and G3 models. The G5 uses the IntelliSense lithium battery (XBTAED001A) with a 4-year operational guarantee and up to 500 shocks capacity. The G3 uses the yellow IntelliSense battery pack. A TSO-certified aviation battery variant is available for units deployed on aircraft.

  • Cardiac Science Powerheart G5 IntelliSense Battery
  • Cardiac Science Powerheart G3 Battery (Yellow)
  • Cardiac Science Powerheart G3 Pro Non-Rechargeable Lithium Battery
  • Cardiac Science Powerheart Battery with TSO Certification for Aviation

Philips HeartStart batteries

For HeartStart OnSite, FRx, and HS1 models. Philips uses the M5070A lithium cartridge battery across the HeartStart line, with a 4-year standby life and a pre-installed charge that means the AED is ready within seconds of installation, no activation step required. One of the simplest battery replacement processes in the AED category.

  • Philips M5070A AED Replacement Battery

HeartSine Samaritan batteries (Pad-Pak)

HeartSine takes a unique approach: the battery and defibrillation pads are combined into a single Pad-Pak cartridge that snaps into the back of the unit. When either expires (whichever comes first), replace the entire Pad-Pak. This eliminates mismatched expiration dates and keeps replacement foolproof.

  • HeartSine Samaritan Pad-Pak (adult)
  • HeartSine Samaritan Pediatric-Pak (pediatric)
  • HeartSine Samaritan AVIATION PAD-PAK with TSO-C142a certification
  • HeartSine Samaritan 350P/360P/450P PAD Training System Pad-Pak (trainer use only)

Defibtech Lifeline batteries

For Defibtech Lifeline, Lifeline AUTO, Lifeline VIEW, and related models. Defibtech batteries are proprietary lithium packs with a 5-year standby life on the Standard battery and a 7-year standby life on the long-life variant.

  • Defibtech Lifeline/Lifeline AUTO Standard Battery Pack
  • Defibtech Lifeline 7-Year Battery
  • Defibtech Lifeline VIEW Battery

Physio-Control LIFEPAK batteries

For LIFEPAK 1000 and LIFEPAK CR2 models. Professional-grade lithium packs used by EMS, fire departments, and large institutional programs.

  • Physio-Control LIFEPAK CR2 Lithium 4-Year Battery

How to know when to replace your AED battery

Every AED runs a self-test cycle daily, weekly, and monthly that checks the battery as part of its readiness assessment. Three signals tell you it is time to replace:

Readiness indicator turns red or AED beeps

Most AEDs emit a recurring beep and show a red indicator when the battery is low or failed. If you hear or see this, replace the battery immediately. Do not return the device to service until the fault is cleared.

Battery has reached its rated shelf life

Even if your AED shows a green indicator, replace on the manufacturer's rated schedule (typically 4 to 7 years). A battery near end-of-life may pass daily self-tests but fail under the high-energy demand of a real rescue.

AED was used in a rescue

After any rescue where a shock was delivered, replace the battery and pads immediately regardless of remaining charge. The device must be fully refreshed before returning to service.

Best practice: Document your battery installation date on the AED inspection tag and in your AED management software. Set a calendar reminder 6 months before the rated expiration date so you have time to order and replace without a gap in readiness.

How to choose the right AED battery

AED batteries are not universal. Each battery is specific to an AED model and in most cases to a generation within that model family. Ordering the wrong battery is the most common purchasing mistake on AED accessories. Follow these four steps:

1

Find your AED model number

Printed on a label on the back or bottom of the unit. For HeartSine, also check the Pad-Pak cartridge currently installed in the device.

2

Note the battery part number

Your current battery will have a part number on its label. Cross-reference this with the product listings above to confirm you are ordering the correct replacement SKU.

3

Check your warranty requirements

Many AED manufacturers require OEM or FDA-cleared batteries to maintain the device warranty. Using an off-brand battery can void your warranty and affect the liability protection your organization relies on.

4
Order before expiration, not after

Ordering 60 to 90 days before your current battery expires gives you time to receive, install, and confirm a clean self-test before the old battery runs out. Never allow a gap in coverage.

OEM vs. compatible AED batteries, what's the difference?

Both options can deliver safe, effective performance, but the right choice depends on your AED's warranty status.

OEM battery

  • Made by or licensed directly by the AED manufacturer
  • Calibrated to the AED's voltage, self-test protocol, and connector specifications
  • Preserves full manufacturer device warranty
  • Recommended for AEDs still within their warranty period
  • Highest confidence for compliance documentation

FDA-cleared compatible battery

  • Made by independent manufacturers to the same electrical specifications
  • Must meet FDA performance standards through 510(k) or equivalent pathway
  • Clearly labeled as compatible at Total AEDs, never sold uncertified
  • Cost-effective alternative for AEDs past manufacturer warranty
  • Same rescue performance when FDA-cleared
Our recommendation: If your AED is within warranty, always use the OEM battery to protect coverage. If your warranty has expired, an FDA-cleared compatible battery can deliver the same performance at a lower price point. We never sell uncertified or off-brand batteries that have not been tested against FDA performance standards.

AED battery and pad bundles

Running your AED battery to end-of-life almost always means your defibrillation pads are approaching expiration too, since most brands rate both at 4 to 5 years. Replacing them together eliminates two separate tracking dates, guarantees your AED is fully refreshed for the next service cycle, and is the most cost-effective approach to AED maintenance.

Battery + Pad bundles available

Total AEDs offers value bundles combining AED batteries and matching defibrillation pads for the most popular models. Look for bundle listings in the product grid above or call us to build a custom reload order for your fleet.

Frequently asked questions about AED batteries

Q

How often do AED batteries need to be replaced?

Based on the manufacturer's rated shelf life, which typically ranges from 4 to 7 years. ZOLL AED Plus and AED 3 batteries last up to 5 years. Cardiac Science Powerheart G5 and G3 batteries carry a 4-year operational guarantee. Defibtech standard batteries last 5 years and the long-life variant lasts 7 years. Philips M5070A and HeartSine Pad-Pak batteries last 4 years. Replace immediately after any rescue where a shock was delivered, regardless of remaining shelf life.

Q

How long do AED batteries last in storage before installation?

Shelf life in storage is slightly longer than installed life for most models, typically 5 to 6 years from manufacture. However, for self-test compatibility and warranty protection, install the battery and begin the shelf-life clock within a reasonable time of purchase. Most AED batteries list an "use by" or "expiration" date on the battery label itself.

Q

Is this battery FDA-cleared and safe for my specific AED model?

Every battery sold by Total AEDs is FDA-cleared and compatible with the specific AED model listed in the product description. We do not sell generic or uncertified batteries. If you are unsure whether a specific battery SKU is compatible with your model variant or serial range, call (855) 286-6384 before ordering and we will confirm compatibility.

Q

What is the guaranteed shelf life of the battery I will receive?

Batteries are shipped with at least 3 to 4 years of remaining shelf life from the date of purchase unless otherwise noted in the product listing. We do not ship batteries that are within 12 months of expiration. If you have a specific minimum remaining shelf life requirement, contact us before placing your order.

Q

Does my AED battery come with a warranty?

Yes. Every AED battery sold by Total AEDs carries either the manufacturer's warranty or, for compatible batteries, the distributor warranty. Most OEM batteries carry a 1 to 4-year warranty depending on brand. Warranty terms are listed on each individual product page.

Q

Will this battery meet the voltage requirements for my older AED model?

AED batteries are model-specific, not universal. As long as you order the battery listed for your exact AED model number, it will meet the voltage, chemistry, and connector specifications required by that device. If you have an older or discontinued AED model, call (855) 286-6384 and we will research availability for you.

Q

Can I use a regular lithium battery in my AED?

Only for the ZOLL AED Plus, which is uniquely designed to run on 10 standard consumer lithium batteries available at retail stores. Every other AED on the market requires a proprietary battery pack specific to that model. Using a non-approved battery in any other AED will fail the device self-test and void the manufacturer warranty.

Q

What happens if my AED fails a self-test after a new battery is installed?

The most likely cause is an installation error such as the battery not fully seated or the connector not locked, or a pad connection issue. Remove and re-seat the battery firmly, then allow the AED to complete a self-test cycle (up to several minutes). If the fault persists, contact the manufacturer's technical support line or call Total AEDs at (855) 286-6384. Do not return the AED to service until the fault is cleared.

Q

Do AED batteries affect the AED's warranty?

Yes. Using a non-OEM or non-FDA-cleared battery in an AED still under manufacturer warranty will typically void the device warranty. For AEDs within their warranty period, always use the OEM battery designated by the manufacturer. For AEDs past warranty, FDA-cleared compatible batteries are a cost-effective alternative.
