AED Rescue Kits

An AED is only half of a sudden cardiac arrest rescue. The other half is the rescue kit, the small zipper pouch that lets a responder cut through clothing, shave a hairy chest, place pads on clean dry skin, deliver hygienic rescue breaths, and protect themselves from bloodborne pathogens, all in the 60 seconds before the AED is ready to shock. Total AEDs carries the full line of AED rescue kits and CPR response kits with everything you need pre-packed in a compact pouch that clips directly to any AED carry case or fits inside any AED wall cabinet. Whether you need a single kit for a home AED, a 50-pack for a school district, or brand-matched kits for ZOLL, Philips, Cardiac Science, HeartSine, Defibtech, or Physio-Control deployments, you'll find the right configuration here. Free standard shipping is available on orders $149+ within the contiguous U.S.

Why every AED needs a rescue kit

Studies of real-world AED deployments consistently show that the first 30 to 60 seconds of a rescue are spent on preparation steps, not on the AED itself. A rescue kit collapses those steps from "frantic search for scissors" to "open pouch, use tools, save life."

1

Faster pad placement

Trauma shears cut through shirts, dresses, suits, and bras in seconds. Without them, responders waste time tugging at clothing. The chest razor handles the second-most-common pad-adhesion problem: heavy chest hair causing a "check pads" error and preventing electrode contact.

2

Rescuer safety

Nitrile gloves and a CPR pocket mask with a one-way valve protect both patient and rescuer from bloodborne pathogens, vomit, and respiratory contamination, in line with OSHA bloodborne pathogen standards (29 CFR 1910.1030) and standard body-substance-isolation (BSI) practice.

3
Compliance and AHA Chain of Survival

A pre-packed rescue kit is the documented industry standard for any AED program, paid or volunteer, and is required by many AED management programs and PAD program audits. The AHA's Chain of Survival depends on bystander confidence. A kit builds it.

What's inside a standard AED rescue kit

Every quality AED rescue kit contains the same core items because every cardiac-arrest rescue follows the same physical preparation sequence.

Trauma shears (paramedic scissors)

Heavy-duty stainless-steel shears (7.5 in. standard EMT length) that cut through shirts, jackets, jeans, bras, leather, and seatbelts in a single pass. The single most-used tool in any AED rescue.

Nitrile gloves (latex-free)

At least one pair, ideally two, of powder-free nitrile gloves. Latex-free is the modern standard (roughly 1 in 100 adults has a latex allergy). Protect the rescuer from blood, vomit, and body fluids during CPR.

Chest hair razor

Disposable single-use razor for shaving pad-placement zones. Heavy chest hair causes pads to fail to adhere and the AED to throw a "check pads" error. Shaving takes 5 to 10 seconds and dramatically improves rescue success.

CPR pocket mask with one-way valve

A barrier device for mouth-to-mask rescue breaths without direct patient contact. The one-way valve prevents back-flow of vomit, blood, or respiratory droplets. Same Laerdal-style mask used in BLS, ACLS, and AHA Heartsaver courses.

Antiseptic wipes

For wiping down the chest if wet from sweat, water, or other moisture before pad application. AED pads cannot adhere to wet skin and may short-circuit if applied to a soaked chest.

Gauze pads or absorbent towel

Used to dry the chest after wiping or absorb blood, vomit, or other contamination during the rescue. Standard kits include 2x2 or 4x4 inch gauze; premium kits include a larger absorbent towel.

Zippered pouch with AED clip

High-visibility red or orange pouch with a clip designed to attach directly to any AED carry case handle so the kit always travels with the device. Premium kits use semi-rigid pouches with internal organization.

Premium and brand-matched kits may also include

Shop AED rescue kits by brand and configuration

Total AEDs stocks rescue kits in three configurations: universal kits that work with any AED, brand-matched kits engineered to fit specific manufacturer carry cases, and bulk packs for fleet deployment.

Universal AED rescue kits

Pre-packed pouches with trauma shears, gloves, chest razor, CPR pocket mask, antiseptic wipes, and gauze. The clip-on pouch attaches to any AED carry case handle so the kit travels with the device. Best for home AEDs, small offices, and general-purpose deployment.

ZOLL CPR-D accessory kits

Brand-engineered kits matched to the ZOLL AED Plus and ZOLL AED 3 with CPR-D-padz. Sized to fit inside the ZOLL carry case. Available in single-pack kits for individual AEDs and 50-pack cases for fleet, school district, and corporate-wide deployments.

Brand-matched kits for other AED lines

For Philips HeartStart, Cardiac Science Powerheart, HeartSine Samaritan PAD, Defibtech Lifeline, and Physio-Control LIFEPAK programs. Each kit is sized to fit the manufacturer's carry case so rescue tools are always within arm's reach of the AED.

Bulk and fleet rescue kits

For schools, multi-site businesses, churches with multiple campuses, gym chains, and any operation managing 5+ AEDs. Available in 10-pack, 25-pack, and 50-pack cases at fleet pricing. Standardizes rescue equipment across every AED location.

AED rescue kit vs. first aid kit, what's the difference?

The two kits get confused because they share some items (gloves, gauze) but they solve completely different problems.

First aid kit

  • Designed for minor injuries: cuts, scrapes, burns, sprains
  • Patient is conscious and breathing
  • Bandages, adhesive plasters, antiseptic, pain relievers
  • Wound care and basic injury management
  • Handles 99% of day-to-day injury response

AED rescue kit

  • Designed for sudden cardiac arrest only
  • Patient is unresponsive and not breathing normally
  • Trauma shears, razor, gloves, CPR mask, antiseptic
  • Physical prep steps before the AED can shock
  • For rare but life-threatening cardiac events
Most facilities should have both. They are complementary, not interchangeable. A first aid kit cannot substitute for an AED rescue kit during cardiac arrest.

How to choose the right AED rescue kit

Three quick decisions narrow your choice from the full selection.

1Match the kit to the AED model

Brand-matched kit

Sized to fit inside the manufacturer's carry case alongside the AED. Cleanest integration. ZOLL CPR-D Accessory Kit is the standard for ZOLL AED Plus and AED 3 programs.

Universal clip-on kit

Attaches to any AED carry case handle via a clip. Works with any brand. Best for mixed-fleet environments, home AEDs, and general-purpose deployments.

2Decide single, multi, or bulk

Single (home / small office)

One kit per AED. Right for home owners and single-site small businesses with one or two AED deployments.

Multi (schools / gyms / offices)

One kit per AED across multiple locations. Schools, gyms, and large offices with 2 to 9 AEDs should stock one kit per device, never share.

Bulk case (10+ AED fleet)

25-pack and 50-pack cases for fleet operators. Reduces purchasing overhead, standardizes equipment, and lowers per-unit cost significantly.

3Match the kit contents to your environment

Standard 5-piece kit

Shears, gloves, razor, CPR mask, antiseptic wipes. Covers 95% of cardiac-arrest scenarios. Right for most offices, schools, and community deployments.

Premium kit with add-ons

Adds biohazard bag, emergency blanket, tourniquet, and glow stick. Worth the upgrade for outdoor venues, athletic programs, and high-risk environments where bleeding or hypothermia is a realistic concern alongside cardiac arrest.

Who buys AED rescue kits?

Pre-packed AED rescue kits are essential for every environment that deploys an AED.

Home AED owners, especially Philips HeartStart OnSite buyers protecting family members at cardiac risk

Schools, daycares, and universities meeting state AED program requirements

Offices and corporate facilities supporting OSHA workplace safety compliance

Gyms, fitness studios, and health clubs (required by AED-in-gym laws in many states)

Churches, places of worship, and community centers

Restaurants, hotels, retail, and hospitality

Sports teams, athletic trainers, coaches, and youth leagues

Lifeguard programs and aquatic facilities

Fire departments, EMS agencies, and law enforcement first-responder vehicles

Manufacturing, warehousing, and industrial sites

AED program managers running multi-site fleets
If you own an AED, you need a rescue kit paired with it. The AED handles the heart. The rescue kit handles the body that surrounds the heart.

Frequently asked questions about AED rescue kits

Q

What should be in an AED rescue kit?

A standard AED rescue kit should contain trauma shears (paramedic scissors), at least one pair of nitrile gloves, a disposable chest hair razor, a CPR pocket mask with a one-way valve, antiseptic wipes, and gauze pads, all in a zippered pouch that clips to the AED carry case. Premium kits add a biohazard bag, mouth-to-mouth shield, and absorbent towel.

Q

Why do you need an AED rescue kit?

Because the first 30 to 60 seconds of a sudden cardiac arrest response are spent preparing the patient before the AED can shock: removing clothing, drying the chest, shaving hair from pad zones, and donning gloves. A pre-packed rescue kit lets the responder do all of that in one motion instead of searching for scissors and gloves while the victim's survival window closes.

Q

Is an AED rescue kit the same as a first aid kit?

No. A first aid kit is built for minor injuries (cuts, sprains, burns) and assumes the patient is conscious. An AED rescue kit is built for sudden cardiac arrest, focused on exposing the chest, attaching pads to clean dry skin, and delivering safe rescue breaths during CPR. Most facilities should stock both.

Q

What are paramedic scissors used for in an AED rescue?

Trauma shears cut through clothing in a single pass to expose the bare chest where AED pads need to be placed. They handle shirts, jackets, bras, jeans, and even seatbelts and leather. Without trauma shears, responders waste critical seconds tugging at clothing instead of starting defibrillation.

Q

Why is there a razor in an AED rescue kit?

AED defibrillation pads need direct skin contact to read the heart rhythm and deliver the shock. On patients with heavy chest hair, the pads cannot adhere properly and the AED may throw a "check pads" error or deliver reduced shock energy. Shaving the pad zones takes 5 to 10 seconds and dramatically improves the rescue's chance of success.

Q

Why do I need gloves in an AED rescue kit?

Nitrile gloves protect the rescuer from blood, vomit, saliva, and other body fluids during CPR and defibrillation, in line with OSHA bloodborne pathogen standards and standard body-substance-isolation practice. Latex-free nitrile is the modern standard because of widespread latex allergies.

Q

How often should I replace items in an AED rescue kit?

Inspect AED rescue kits monthly alongside the AED itself. Replace gloves and antiseptic wipes if expired (typically 3 to 5 years from manufacture). Replace gauze, razors, and pocket masks if the packaging is opened, damaged, or tampered with. Trauma shears generally last the life of the AED but should be inspected for rust or dull blades.

Q

Where should I store the AED rescue kit?

Store the rescue kit attached to the AED itself, either clipped to the carry case handle (universal kits) or inside the carry case alongside the AED (brand-matched kits like the ZOLL CPR-D Accessory Kit). The kit must travel with the AED. Storing it in a separate cabinet or first aid station defeats the purpose.

Q

Are AED rescue kits required by OSHA?

OSHA does not directly require AED rescue kits, but it does require that facilities protect workers from bloodborne pathogen exposure (29 CFR 1910.1030). The gloves and CPR barrier mask in an AED rescue kit satisfy that requirement during cardiac-arrest response. AED management programs and AHA-aligned PAD programs treat rescue kits as required equipment.

Q

Can I use an AED rescue kit at home?

Yes. AED rescue kits are equally important for home AED owners, especially because home rescues are often performed by an untrained spouse or family member with no equipment readily available. A clip-on rescue kit attached to the AED carry case ensures the responder has scissors, gloves, a razor, and a CPR mask immediately, even if they have never handled an emergency before.
