Find the right pads for your AED model

OEM-only electrode pads for Philips, ZOLL, Cardiac Science, HeartSine, Defibtech, and Physio-Control.

Why replacing AED pads on schedule saves lives

An AED that passes its self-test with a green Rescue Ready indicator can still fail to defibrillate if the electrode pads are expired. Pads matter as much as the device itself.

Adhesive degrades over time

Medical-grade adhesive is required for consistent skin contact. Expired pads can peel, slide, or fail to seat, reducing shock delivery efficiency and potentially arcing.

Gel conductivity changes

Pads contain a conductive gel layer between adhesive and electrode. As pads age past their rated shelf life, gel conductivity drops, affecting impedance compensation and delivered energy.

Expired pads void compliance status

State PAD laws, OSHA workplace safety, Joint Commission standards, and AHA best practices all require that installed pads have not passed their printed expiration date.

Most pads expire before batteries

Adult pads carry 2-year shelf life (HeartSine, Cardiac Science) up to 5 years (ZOLL). Pads are typically the highest-volume consumable in an AED fleet.

Used pads must be replaced after every rescue

AED electrode pads are single-use. Any AED that delivered a shock or ran a rescue sequence must have pads replaced before returning to service, regardless of remaining shelf life.

How to choose the right AED replacement pads

AED pads are not universal. Every brand uses a proprietary connector, adhesive geometry, and cable configuration. Using incompatible pads can prevent the device from recognizing the electrode connection, causing it to alarm and refuse to analyze rhythm.

1Identify your AED model exactly

Check the back of the unit or battery compartment label

The model number is on the back of the AED, on the battery compartment label, or on the cabinet door tag. "Philips" alone is not enough: the HeartStart OnSite uses M5071A Smart Pads, the HeartStart FRx uses FRx SMART Pads II (989803139261), and those part numbers are not interchangeable. The same specificity rule applies across every other brand.

2Confirm adult vs. pediatric

Adult pads (standard)

Ships installed on all AEDs sold in the U.S. For patients 8 years old and older, or 55 lbs and over. Standard configuration for most facilities.

Pediatric pads (required for under 8 / 55 lbs)

Attenuate shock energy to child-safe levels. Required for schools, daycares, sports programs, and any family-facing business. Always stock both adult and pediatric pads if children are present.

3Check the expiration date of your current pads

Reorder at 6 months remaining, not at zero

The expiration date is printed on the exterior of the pad packaging and sometimes on the pad cable. If pads are within 6 months of expiry, order replacements now. Track pad and battery expiration dates in a monthly inspection log and reorder before expiration, not after.

Philips HeartStart AED pads

HeartStart OnSite (HS1): M5071A Adult Smart Pads and M5072A Infant/Child Cartridge Electrode Pads. HeartStart FRx: FRx SMART Pads II (989803139261) for adults, Philips FRx Infant/Child Key for pediatric mode activation. Philips Smart Pads carry approximately a 2-year shelf life.

ZOLL AED pads

AED Plus: CPR-D-padz, a one-piece adult electrode with a 5-year shelf life including Real CPR Help compression-depth sensing. Pedi-padz II sold separately for pediatric rescues. AED 3: CPR Uni-padz III, a universal electrode working on both adults and children from one pad set. Also available: Stat Padz II and CPR Stat Padz HVP for clinical and ALS applications.

Cardiac Science Powerheart AED pads

G5: XELAED001A adult pads, XELAED002A adult iCPR feedback pads for IntelliSense CPR coaching, and XELAED003A pediatric pads for patients under 55 lbs. G3 Plus and G3 Pro use the original Cardiac Science adult and pediatric electrode format. G5 and G3 pads are not interchangeable.

HeartSine Samaritan AED pads

HeartSine uses a unique Pad-Pak cartridge that combines the battery and electrode pads in a single unit. Adult Pad-Pak (350P, 360P, 450P) and Pediatric-Pak replace both pads and battery in one purchase. Also available: Aviation PAD-PAK with TSO-C142a certification for commercial aviation use. Approximately 2-year shelf life from manufacture.

Defibtech AED pads

Adult and pediatric electrode pads available separately for each device family: Lifeline, Lifeline AUTO, and Lifeline VIEW. Lifeline VIEW pads are specific to the full-color display unit and are not compatible with the standard Lifeline. Defibtech also carries the Lifeline VIEW rechargeable pad format. Approximately 2-year shelf life.

Physio-Control LIFEPAK AED pads

LIFEPAK CR2: QUIK-STEP 4-Year Electrode Pad integrating CPR pacing and ECG lead capability. LIFEPAK 1000: REDI-PAK adult electrode (11996-000017) or QUIK-COMBO Leads-In pads (11996-000091) for clinical ECG monitoring. Also available: infant/child electrode pads (11101-000016) and the Pediatric Electrode Pad Starter Kit.

Adult vs. pediatric AED pads, what's the difference?

Choosing the wrong pad type is a clinical error, not just a compliance issue. Here is the practical distinction.

Adult pads

  • For patients 8 years old and older, or 55 lbs and over
  • Calibrated for adult energy levels (typically 150 to 200 joules)
  • Standard configuration on all AEDs sold in the U.S.
  • Can be used on a child as a last resort if pediatric pads are unavailable (do not allow pads to overlap)

Pediatric pads

  • For patients under 8 years old or 55 lbs
  • Attenuate shock energy to child-safe level (typically 50 joules)
  • Sized for smaller chest dimensions
  • Must never be used on an adult patient (insufficient energy dose for adult cardiac arrest)
AHA guidance: Adult pads may be used on a child if no pediatric pads are available, positioning one pad on the front of the chest and one on the back to avoid overlap. However, pediatric pads should always be the first choice. Every AED program serving children should stock pediatric pads or a pediatric-mode key as standard equipment.

AED pad shelf life by brand

Knowing pad shelf life helps you build an accurate replacement schedule and annual budget. Total AEDs ships pads with the maximum remaining shelf life currently available. If you need pads with a specific expiration date or minimum remaining life for compliance purposes, call (855) 286-6384 before ordering.

What to do after an AED is used in a rescue

If an AED delivered a shock during a cardiac arrest event, the pads must be replaced before the device is returned to service. This applies even if the pads appear undamaged and only one shock was delivered.

1

Remove and discard used electrode pads

Follow biomedical waste protocol for disposal. Do not attempt to clean or reuse pads that were applied during a live rescue.

2

Install a new set of OEM adult electrode pads

Order and install brand-matched replacement pads. Never substitute a different brand or model.

3

Replace pediatric pads if they were used

If pediatric pads were deployed in the rescue, replace those as well before returning the AED to service.

4

Confirm battery charge status

Check the battery indicator. Replace the battery if low or if the AED delivered multiple shocks during the rescue.

5

Power on and confirm Rescue Ready status

The readiness indicator should return to green after the new pads and battery are installed and the AED completes its self-test.

6

Document the replacement in the inspection log

Record the date, the rescuer's name, the new pad lot number and expiration date, and the new battery status in your AED maintenance log.

7
Register the rescue event with your AED program service

If enrolled in an AED management program, report the rescue event for post-rescue review and compliance documentation. This step is also important for quality improvement in your organization's emergency response program.

If the AED analyzed but did not shock (no-shock-advised rhythm), check pad adhesion and condition. If pads were fully applied and removed, replace them before the next use even if no shock was delivered.

Frequently asked questions about AED pads

Q

How often should AED pads be replaced?

AED pads should be replaced when they reach their printed expiration date, after any rescue where they were applied regardless of whether a shock was delivered, or if the packaging seal is broken or pads have been exposed to extreme temperature or moisture. Most programs should check pad expiration dates monthly as part of routine AED inspection.

Q

Are AED pads universal?

No. AED pads are brand and often model specific. Each manufacturer uses a proprietary connector, cable length, adhesive pattern, and gel formulation. Using pads from a different brand on your AED will typically cause the device to alarm and refuse to analyze. Always order pads that match your exact AED model number.

Q

Will these pads fit my specific AED model?

If you select pads by brand and model from the product grid, they will be compatible. If you are unsure, the model number on the back of your AED is the definitive compatibility reference. Call us at (855) 286-6384 and our team will confirm compatibility before you order.

Q

Can you use adult AED pads on a child?

As a last resort, yes. Adult pads can be used on a child if no pediatric pads are available, provided they do not overlap. The AHA recommends positioning one pad on the front of the chest and one on the back if overlap is a concern. However, pediatric pads deliver the appropriate attenuated energy level for children and should always be the first choice.

Q

Are these pads FDA-cleared for use in the U.S.?

Yes. Every electrode pad sold by Total AEDs is a genuine OEM product that was FDA-cleared alongside the AED model it was designed for. We do not carry aftermarket, off-brand, or uncertified pads. FDA-cleared OEM pads are the only medically and legally appropriate choice for a deployed AED.

Q

Do AED pads include a rescue kit with scissors and gloves?

Some do, some do not. The ZOLL CPR-D-padz set includes gloves and scissors in the pad packaging as standard. Other brands (Philips, Cardiac Science, HeartSine, Defibtech) do not include rescue supplies with the pad set. If your facility does not have a separate AED rescue kit containing a CPR shield, gloves, prep razor, and trauma shears, we recommend adding one to your order.

Q

Do AED pads expire if the AED is never used?

Yes. AED pad expiration is based on time from manufacture, not on use. The adhesive, gel, and packaging all degrade over time regardless of whether the pads have ever been deployed. An AED that sits unused for five years with the original pads installed will still need new pads if those pads have passed their expiration date.

Q

What is the difference between standard AED pads and CPR feedback pads?

Standard electrode pads deliver defibrillation energy only. CPR feedback pads such as ZOLL CPR-D-padz and Cardiac Science iCPR pads incorporate a compression sensor that measures chest compression depth and rate in real time, allowing the AED to coach the rescuer on CPR quality. CPR feedback pads require a compatible AED model with Real CPR Help or IntelliSense CPR feedback capability.

Q

How do I know when my AED pads are expiring?

The expiration date is printed on the exterior of the pad packaging, typically on the front label or on a sticker on the back. Many AED cabinets have a window that lets you read the pad expiration without opening the cabinet. For active programs, track pad and battery expiration dates in a monthly inspection log or enroll in an AED management program that sends automatic replacement reminders.
