Choking Rescue Aids

Total AEDs carries LifeVac, the first and only FDA-authorized anti-choking suction device in the United States. LifeVac is a non-powered, non-invasive portable choking rescue device that uses one-way valve suction to dislodge a foreign body airway obstruction when standard BLS choking protocols, including back blows and abdominal thrusts, have been attempted and failed. It is safe for adults, children, and infants 1 year of age and older, requires no special training, and can be used by any lay person or medical professional. Choking is the fourth leading cause of accidental death in the U.S., claiming approximately 5,000 lives each year, including one child every five days. A LifeVac choking rescue device in your home, office, school, or restaurant is your emergency backup when the Heimlich maneuver is not enough. Free standard shipping is available on orders $149+ within the contiguous U.S.

What is a choking rescue device and how does it work?

Important: Standard choking protocols (back blows, abdominal thrusts, chest compressions) are always the first response to a choking emergency. LifeVac is a second-line treatment, used when those methods have been attempted without success and the victim remains in complete airway obstruction.

A choking rescue device is a portable, non-invasive suction tool designed to clear a foreign body airway obstruction (FBAO) when standard first aid choking maneuvers have failed to dislodge the blockage. The average emergency response time in the U.S. is 7 to 12 minutes. In a complete choking emergency where the victim cannot breathe, speak, or cough, that response window is fatal without an immediate on-site solution.

1

Press mask firmly over mouth and nose

Seal must be airtight over the victim's face

2

Pull the plunger upward sharply

Generates negative pressure suction force directed outward

3

One-way valve draws obstruction out

Suction travels outward only, zero risk of pushing object deeper

Why LifeVac is the best choking rescue device

FDA Authorized

In March 2026, the U.S. FDA granted LifeVac De Novo authorization as a Class II medical device, making it the first and only FDA-authorized suction-based anti-choking device in the United States. A peer-reviewed 2021 case series reported successful airway clearance in 38 of 39 real-world choking emergencies over 6 years.

Only FDA-authorized device

No other anti-choking suction device in the U.S. holds FDA De Novo authorization. LifeVac is the only Class II cleared anti-choking device available.

One-way valve prevents deeper obstruction

Creates suction in one direction only, outward. Unlike abdominal thrusts, LifeVac cannot push an object into a more complete blockage.

No training required

Any lay person aged 18 or older can administer LifeVac following the illustrated instructions included in every kit. No medical background or BLS certification needed.

Adults, children, and infants 1 year and older

Each kit includes an adult mask and a child/infant mask, covering every choking victim a family, school, restaurant, or care facility might encounter.

Non-powered and always ready

No batteries, no electricity, no charging. LifeVac is ready to use at any moment without any preparation, charge cycle, or battery check.

Texas-mandated, nationally adopted

In 2025, Texas became the first U.S. state to mandate LifeVac in every school. Hundreds of fire departments, nursing homes, restaurants, and healthcare facilities now stock LifeVac as standard emergency equipment.

Free replacement after use

If you use your LifeVac in a real choking emergency, submit the incident report and LifeVac LLC sends a free replacement unit, so you are always covered.

Best for: Home and family

LifeVac Travel Kit

$79.95

Same LifeVac device and mask set as the Home Kit, packaged in a compact travel-ready pouch. Designed for use in cars, on airplanes, at sporting events, camping, and any scenario away from your home kit. Right for families spending time where emergency response may be delayed.

LifeVac EMS Kit

$75.00

Configured for professional first responder and medical use. Includes the LifeVac device, adult mask, child/infant mask, and additional accessories suited for EMS, fire departments, nursing homes, and healthcare facility use. Also the most cost-effective option for deploying multiple units across a facility or fleet.

Best for: Facilities and first responders

Where should a choking rescue device be kept?

Placement follows the same logic as AED placement: the device is only useful if it is immediately accessible during the emergency.

Kitchen and home

Most home choking incidents involve food at the dining table or kitchen. Mount or store the LifeVac Home Kit at the same height and visibility as a fire extinguisher.

Restaurant and food service

Among the highest-risk environments for adult choking. One LifeVac per dining area, mounted in a visible wall bracket, is the recommended commercial deployment.

Schools and daycare facilities

Texas law mandates one LifeVac per school. Best practice is one unit per cafeteria, one near the main office, and one per floor in larger buildings.

Nursing homes and care facilities

Residents with dysphagia are at the highest statistical risk for choking-related death. LifeVac is designed for exactly this population and their caregivers.

Offices and corporate facilities

OSHA recommends workplace first aid kits in all employment settings. Adding a LifeVac to your existing first aid supplies costs under $80 and meaningfully expands your emergency response capability.

Sports venues and gyms

Athletes and spectators choke on food, mouthguards, and equipment. A LifeVac Travel Kit in the trainer's bag is now standard in many athletic programs.

Vehicles and travel bags

For road trips, camping, boating, and international travel where emergency services may be delayed beyond 10 minutes from the incident.

Choking rescue device vs. Heimlich maneuver, what's the difference?

The Heimlich maneuver (abdominal thrusts), back blows, and chest compressions are always the first response to a choking emergency. LifeVac does not replace them. It supplements them.

BLS choking protocol (first)

  • No equipment required, begins in seconds
  • Back blows and abdominal thrusts (Heimlich maneuver)
  • Standard first aid for any witnessed choking emergency
  • May be less effective in elderly, obese, or dysphagic patients
  • Small risk of moving a partial obstruction into a more complete blockage
  • Infant-specific technique required for children under 1 year

LifeVac (second, if BLS fails)

  • Used after BLS protocols have been attempted without success
  • Negative pressure suction draws obstruction outward
  • One-way valve prevents driving object further into airway
  • Works on adults, children, and infants 1 year and older
  • No training required, illustrated instructions included
  • Immediate on-site option during the 7 to 12 minute EMS response window
Use BLS choking protocol first. Use LifeVac second if BLS fails and the victim remains in complete airway obstruction.

Who should have a choking rescue device?

LifeVac is the right addition to your emergency preparedness for any of the following environments and individuals.

Families with young children under 5 (highest-risk demographic for food and small-object choking)

Households with elderly members or anyone with dysphagia, Parkinson's disease, dementia, or stroke history

Parents and guardians seeking the best infant choking rescue device (covers infants 1 year and older)

Schools, daycares, and preschools (Texas-mandated and widely adopted nationally)

Restaurants, cafes, and food service operations

Assisted living facilities, nursing homes, and home health aides

Sports coaches, athletic trainers, and camp counselors

Offices and workplaces expanding their first aid supplies

CPR and first aid instructors adding anti-choking device instruction to their curriculum

Group homes and facilities serving individuals with developmental disabilities

Frequently asked questions about choking rescue devices

Q

Do choking rescue devices really work?

LifeVac has documented real-world rescue data. A peer-reviewed 2021 case series published in Frontiers in Medicine reported successful airway clearance in 38 of 39 real choking emergencies. LifeVac also received FDA De Novo authorization in March 2026 as a Class II medical device, the first and only anti-choking suction device to receive this designation. LifeVac should always be used as a second-line treatment after standard BLS protocols (back blows and abdominal thrusts) have been attempted without success.

Q

Are choking rescue devices safe for infants?

LifeVac is cleared for use on pediatric choking victims 1 year of age and older. It is not intended for infants under 12 months, for whom infant back blows and chest thrusts remain the standard BLS protocol. For victims 1 year and older, LifeVac includes a child/infant mask sized for smaller faces. The one-way valve design prevents any possibility of driving the obstruction further into the airway.

Q

Is there a risk of the device pushing the object further down the throat?

No. LifeVac uses a patented one-way valve that allows suction force in one direction only, outward. This is one of the key safety advantages over abdominal thrusts, which create positive pressure that carries a theoretical risk of moving a partial obstruction into a more complete blocking position.

Q

Can I use this device on myself if I am alone during a choking incident?

LifeVac can be self-administered with practice and if the user is physically able to hold and operate the device. The kit includes a practice mask specifically to familiarize yourself with the motion before an emergency. Self-administration is significantly harder than administering to another person and requires that the user not already be fully incapacitated. For solo choking, the recommended first attempt is abdominal thrusts against a hard surface such as a chair back or countertop edge.

Q

How many times can I use the device before needing to replace it?

LifeVac is designed as a single-use device per real deployment, meaning it should be replaced after being used in an actual choking emergency. The included practice mask is separate and is for training rehearsal only. If you use your LifeVac in a choking emergency, submit the incident report on LifeVac's website and they will send you a free replacement unit.

Q

Is LifeVac FDA approved?

LifeVac received FDA De Novo authorization in March 2026, making it the first and only FDA-authorized anti-choking suction device in the United States. It is classified as a Class II medical device. This is a different pathway from traditional 510(k) clearance but carries the same FDA authorization for marketing and distribution. No other anti-choking suction device currently holds this authorization.

Q

Can LifeVac be used by someone without medical training?

Yes. LifeVac is explicitly authorized for use by lay persons 18 years or older. The kit includes illustrated step-by-step instructions and a practice mask. No BLS certification, CPR training, or medical background is required. LifeVac LLC strongly recommends reviewing the included training video and practicing with the practice mask before an emergency occurs.

Q

Does LifeVac work on unconscious choking victims?

Yes. LifeVac can be used on an unconscious victim. Standard BLS guidance is to begin CPR and call 911 if the victim loses consciousness. LifeVac can be applied to an unconscious victim while awaiting EMS arrival.

Q

What comes in a LifeVac kit?

Every LifeVac kit includes the LifeVac suction device, an adult mask, a child/infant mask, a practice mask (for non-emergency rehearsal only), illustrated instructions for use, and access to the LifeVac online training video. The EMS kit includes additional accessories suited for professional deployment.
