AED Packages for Golf Courses

Golf course AED packages built for the two problems a course has that a clubhouse alone cannot solve: players are often older and at elevated cardiac risk, and they are frequently far from any building when it matters.

Why golf courses carry elevated cardiac risk

A peer-reviewed study using national cardiac arrest registry data identified golf courses as the fifth most frequent location for out-of-hospital cardiac arrest in public settings, with 476 cases recorded between 2020 and 2023.

Demographics

The same study found 91.4% of golf course cardiac arrest patients were male, consistent with industry-reported figures of 82 to 85% male among older golfers specifically.

Exertion plus age

Physical exertion is associated with increased cardiac arrest risk during and immediately after activity, compounding the risk already present in an older player population.

Industry recognition

The Professional Golfers' Association of America recommends AEDs at golfing facilities, cited directly in the peer-reviewed study as an existing industry position.

Arriving on the property is not the same as reaching the patient

EMS commonly takes 3 to 5 minutes to reach the golf course itself. Reaching the actual patient can take an additional 3 to 5 minutes beyond that, because the clubhouse or parking lot is rarely where the emergency is happening.

The placement implication

A single AED at the clubhouse cannot meet any reasonable response-time target for a player on a distant hole.

Distributed, course-wide coverage is the only way to close that gap, which is why lightweight, transportable devices matter more here than at almost any other property type.

A separate, unrelated risk worth knowing: a golf ball impact to the chest can trigger commotio cordis, a rhythm-disrupting mechanism explained in depth on our AED guide for schools and youth athletics.

It is relevant to golfers of any age struck by a ball, not only young athletes.

Golf courses named directly in state AED law

StateRequirement
ConnecticutEvery public golf course must maintain an AED in a central location. "Public golf course" is defined by statute as 9+ holes and 2,750+ yards.
New YorkGolf courses are named directly alongside stadiums and arenas in the same state and local AED law. See our stadium page's fuller treatment of this law.

Most states do not currently mandate AEDs at golf courses, though industry and governing-body recommendations, including from the PGA of America, exist regardless. Confirm your own state's requirement directly.

What belongs in a golf course AED package

  • Lightweight, weather-rated AED
  • Cart-transportable carry case
  • Outdoor-rated wall cabinet for clubhouse or halfway house
  • Adult and pediatric-capable pad path
  • Spare battery and pad set
  • Rescue kit: gloves, razor, scissors, barrier mask
  • Physician's prescription, included

Full contents, warranty terms and current pricing are on each product page: Defibtech Lifeline AED Value Package, HeartSine samaritan PAD AED Value Package, or ZOLL AED Plus Value Packages.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best AED for a golf course?

Prioritize a lightweight, weather-rated device that can be carried on a cart without damage, alongside simple voice-guided operation for players and staff with no medical background.

Do golf courses need AEDs?

Most states do not mandate it, though Connecticut and New York explicitly require or name golf courses in their AED laws. The PGA of America recommends AEDs at golfing facilities regardless of state requirement.

Confirm your own state's specific requirement directly; this is not legal advice.

How many AEDs should a golf course have?

More than one, on most 18-hole layouts. Reaching a patient on a distant hole can take an additional 3 to 5 minutes beyond EMS simply arriving at the property, so a single clubhouse unit rarely provides adequate coverage.

Call (855) 286-6384 with your course layout for a specific placement recommendation.

Are AEDs required on golf carts?

No confirmed legal mandate requires AEDs to be mounted on carts specifically. Given how spread out a course is, lightweight cart-based transport is common practical guidance, not a legal requirement.

How much does a golf course AED package cost?

Current pricing is listed on each product page, since it varies by brand and changes over time. See the Defibtech, HeartSine and ZOLL packages linked above.

Are these devices easy enough for a non-medical golfer to use under stress?

Yes. Every AED we sell is designed for untrained bystander use, with voice guidance through each step.

Golf presents a distinct challenge: a typical playing group is only two to four people, a smaller and more isolated responder pool than a crowded venue, which makes simple, unambiguous device operation matter even more.
