Why every church needs an AED

350K
out-of-hospital sudden cardiac arrests in the U.S. each year
7-10%
survival rate drops per minute without defibrillation
7-10 min
average U.S. EMS response time, the bystander acts first
65%
of U.S. adults 65+ attend weekly religious services

For most churches, the first responder during a sudden cardiac arrest is an usher, a deacon, a Sunday school teacher, or a congregant. Three reasons SCA is a real risk in church environments:

Older demographics

The median age of most U.S. denominations is 50 to 60, the demographic statistically most at risk. Roughly 65% of adults aged 65+ attend weekly services.

Large gatherings

Sunday services, weddings, funerals, holiday observances, and community events concentrate large groups. Risk compounded across years of weekly gatherings becomes meaningful.

Emotional and physical triggers

Worship services, music programs, baptisms, and emotional sermons produce stress responses that can trigger cardiac events in susceptible individuals carrying underlying risk factors.

The American Heart Association strongly recommends AEDs for places of worship as part of a complete emergency response plan. Most legal counsel treats AED installation as a duty-of-care best practice that strengthens insurance posture and protects the church from negligence claims.

What's inside every Total AEDs church value package

Every package on this page gives a small or medium church a complete, deploy-ready PAD program out of one box. No separate sourcing required.

FDA-cleared AED

Defibtech, HeartSine, or ZOLL brand-name unit with 4 to 8-year manufacturer warranty depending on model.

New OEM adult defibrillation pads

Full multi-year shelf life, pre-connected on most models for fastest deployment during a rescue.

New OEM battery

4 to 7-year service life depending on model. Full charge, ready to use from day one.

Alarmed wall cabinet

95 dB or louder alarm audible across most sanctuaries and fellowship halls. Deters tampering and alerts ushers and greeters when the cabinet is opened.

AED signage

Wall sign with ILCOR/ISO 7010 green symbol and "AED on Premises" decal for the church's main entrance so EMS knows on arrival.

CPR rescue kit

Trauma shears, nitrile gloves, chest razor, CPR pocket mask, antiseptic wipes, and gauze. Collapses the first 30 to 60 seconds of rescue prep into one open-pouch motion.

Medical prescription

Required for AED ownership in most U.S. states. Included at no extra charge with every package.

User manual, rescue guide, and inspection tag

Quick-reference rescue guide for the wall and a monthly inspection tag for your facility binder. Free standard shipping on orders $149+.

How to choose the right AED package for your church

Three decisions narrow the selection from "any AED" to "the right AED for our congregation." Work through each step before clicking into a specific package.

1Match the AED to your volunteer rescuer profile

Video-display AED

For older volunteers who may freeze under voice prompts alone. The Defibtech Lifeline VIEW shows full-motion rescue instructions on screen, eliminating hesitation in first-time responders.

Real CPR Help (ZOLL)

For volunteers comfortable with voice prompts. ZOLL AED Plus provides live chest-compression depth and rate feedback, the single biggest variable in cardiac arrest survival after defibrillation.

Most compact and lightweight

HeartSine Samaritan PAD is the lightest AED in the category. Ideal for churches where a single device must be carried quickly across a campus or large sanctuary.

2Plan for the 3-minute rule

Single building (1 AED)

One AED in the main lobby or narthex covers most small churches. Anyone should be able to retrieve it and return to the victim within 3 minutes round-trip.

Multi-building campus (2-4 AEDs)

Separate education wing, gym, outdoor pavilion, or parking ministry require additional units. Walk your campus with a stopwatch during your busiest service to identify coverage gaps.

3Account for children's programs

Separate pediatric pads

Defibtech Lifeline and ZOLL AED Plus require separate pediatric pads for victims under 8 years or 55 lbs. Order pediatric pads alongside the package if you run nursery, Sunday school, or VBS programs.

Built-in pediatric key

Philips HeartStart FRx uses a reusable Infant/Child Key. More cost-effective long-term for child-heavy congregations with active nursery, preschool, youth, or sports league programs.

4Choose your cabinet configuration

Audible alarm (standard)

Included by default in every package. 95 dB siren audible across most sanctuaries and fellowship halls. Deters tampering and alerts ushers when opened.

Audible alarm + strobe (large sanctuary)

The strobe provides visual notification to ushers and greeters even when amplified worship music drowns out the siren. Recommended for large sanctuaries and multi-campus facilities.

AED packages for different church sizes

Different congregations need different setups. Match your church to the right configuration below.

Small churches

Under 150 members

One AED in the main lobby or narthex covers the entire ministry footprint. HeartSine Samaritan PAD or Defibtech Lifeline church value packages are the right fit. Total all-in cost typically $1,500 to $2,000.

Medium churches

150 to 500 members

One AED in the lobby plus a second unit near the fellowship hall or education wing. ZOLL AED Plus or Defibtech Lifeline VIEW packages add the live-feedback features that help untrained volunteers perform high-quality CPR. Fleet cost typically $3,500 to $4,500 for two complete packages.

Large churches and multi-campus

500+ members

3 to 5 AEDs across the sanctuary, fellowship hall, education wing, gym, and outdoor pavilion. Each satellite campus needs its own complete package plus a centralized AED management program for fleet-wide expiration tracking. Volume pricing applies on 3+ orders. Call us for a quote.

Synagogues, temples, mosques

All faiths

The same package logic applies regardless of denomination. Older congregations, large gathering spaces, multi-room facilities, and event-driven schedules all carry the same SCA risk profile. We've equipped faith communities of every denomination across the U.S. with these same value packages.

Where to place your church's AED

Cabinet placement is as important as the AED inside it. The AHA-aligned placement standard for church environments, mounting the viewing window center 60 to 72 inches above the floor with a 3D flag projecting sign for corridor visibility.

Main lobby / narthex

The single best location for most small-to-medium churches. Everyone passes through it on the way to the sanctuary, classrooms, and fellowship hall.

Near the sanctuary entrance

For large sanctuaries, mount just outside the main worship doors so an usher can retrieve it without crossing the room mid-service.

Fellowship hall and gym

High-traffic gathering spaces with concentrated activity, food, exercise, and high attendance during events. A second AED here matters for any church running active fellowship programs.

Education wing and children's ministry

Sunday school, nursery, and youth wings often sit on a different floor or building. Coverage here matters especially for congregations with active children's programs.

Outdoor pavilions and parking ministry

For outdoor services, summer revivals, sports leagues, or large parking teams, an outdoor-rated AED cabinet ensures coverage during exterior events.

Building a cardiac emergency response team at your church

An AED on the wall is necessary but not sufficient. The most prepared churches build a small Cardiac Emergency Response Team (CERT) of 5 to 10 volunteers who are CPR/AED certified and who lead the rescue when SCA happens during a service.

AED, cabinet, signage, and rescue kit

Covered by every package on this page. The hardware foundation of any church cardiac readiness program.

Documented Emergency Response Plan (ERP)

Names the CERT team members, the steps to call 911, the AED retrieval path, and the EMS handoff protocol so everyone knows their role before the emergency happens.

Annual CPR/AED certification for the CERT team

AHA Heartsaver, BLS, or Red Cross-aligned certification for 5 to 10 designated volunteers, renewed annually or biennially. Training products and AED trainers available on our training products page.

Monthly readiness inspections

Confirm the green status indicator, verify pads and battery have not expired, and sign the included inspection tag. Takes 2 minutes per AED and protects the church's liability documentation.

AED management program (multi-AED churches)

Automates expiration tracking and fleet-wide reporting for churches managing 3 or more AEDs across multiple buildings or campuses.

How to fund your church's AED package

Cost is the single most-cited reason churches delay AED installation. Most congregations can fund a complete package without straining the operating budget.

Dedicated offering

A single Sunday's "AED Fund" offering typically covers an entire package at most small-to-medium churches.

Memorial gift

Many AED installations are funded through memorial gifts honoring a loved one. The AED becomes a tangible legacy that protects future congregants.

Annual safety budget

Multi-AED churches and large campuses build AED replacement and maintenance into the annual facilities or safety budget as a standing line item.

Healthcare and business partnerships

Hospitals, cardiology practices, and local businesses with congregants on staff frequently donate AEDs to their community churches.

PAD program grants

Several state and county PAD program grants are available for nonprofit organizations including faith-based institutions. Check your state department of public health.

Refurbished AEDs

Professionally refurbished defibrillators at 30 to 50% savings off new prices, with the same 2-year warranty. An attractive option for budget-conscious congregations with the same life-saving capability.

Frequently asked questions about AED packages for churches

Q

Does a church need an AED by law?

No federal law requires churches to install AEDs. However, several states have passed AED-in-public-buildings laws that include large places of worship, and the American Heart Association strongly recommends AEDs in churches as part of a complete emergency response plan. Most legal counsel treats AED installation as a duty-of-care best practice that strengthens insurance posture and reduces negligence exposure.

Q

What should be included in a church AED bundle?

A complete church AED bundle should include the FDA-cleared AED, new OEM pads, new battery, an alarmed wall cabinet, AED wall signage with the ILCOR/ISO 7010 green symbol, a CPR rescue kit (shears, gloves, razor, pocket mask), the required medical prescription, an inspection tag for monthly documentation, and a manufacturer warranty. Every package on this page includes all of these by default.

Q

Can we get a discount for multiple units?

Yes. Total AEDs offers volume pricing for any church, multi-campus ministry, or denominational network purchasing 3 or more AED packages. Contact us with the number of campuses, expected AED count, and any pediatric or outdoor requirements and we'll quote a complete fleet package with bulk pricing.

Q

Does the warranty cover church environments?

Yes. Standard manufacturer warranties cover the AED for typical indoor use, including sanctuaries, fellowship halls, and education wings. Defibtech, HeartSine, and ZOLL AEDs in our church packages all carry 4 to 8-year warranties valid in any indoor environment. For outdoor services or rugged placements, ask about the Philips HeartStart FRx or Cardiac Science Powerheart G5 (IP55-rated) as a custom upgrade.

Q

Will the cabinet alarm be heard across a large sanctuary?

The standard alarmed cabinet sounds at 95 dB or louder, audible across most small-to-medium sanctuaries and fellowship halls. For larger sanctuaries or worship environments with live music, upgrade to a cabinet with both an audible alarm and a strobe light. The strobe provides visual notification to ushers and greeters even when amplified worship audio drowns out the siren.

Q

Who should use the AED in a church emergency?

Anyone present can and should use the AED. The American Heart Association explicitly designed AEDs for lay rescuers with no medical training. The device analyzes the victim's heart rhythm and only delivers a shock if one is needed. It cannot shock a person who doesn't require defibrillation. We strongly recommend training a CERT team of 5 to 10 volunteers, but the AED is safe for any willing rescuer.

Q

How often does the AED need maintenance?

Run a monthly readiness inspection: confirm the green status indicator is steady, verify pads and battery have not expired, and sign the inspection tag. Replace pads every 2 years and batteries every 4 to 7 years depending on model. Most churches assign these inspections to a single facility manager or CERT team lead so accountability is clear.

Q

Can the AED be used on a child in Sunday school or VBS?

Yes, but most models require pediatric pads or a pediatric mode for victims under 8 years old or weighing under 55 pounds. If your church runs a nursery, preschool, Sunday school, youth group, VBS, or sports league, ensure your package includes pediatric pads or upgrade to a model with a built-in pediatric key such as the Philips HeartStart FRx, Cardiac Science Powerheart G5, or ZOLL AED 3 with CPR Uni-padz.

Q

How much does a church AED package cost?

Complete church AED packages from Total AEDs typically range $1,500 to $2,200 per unit depending on the AED model. The Defibtech Lifeline package starts at $1,523, the HeartSine Samaritan PAD package at $1,948.75, and the ZOLL AED Plus package at $2,119. Refurbished AED packages are available at 30 to 50% savings.

Q

How long before consumables need replacement?

Pads expire 2 years from manufacture. Batteries last 4 to 7 years depending on model. The AED unit itself, with consumables replaced on schedule, delivers 8 to 10 years of reliable service. The HeartSine Pad-Pak combines pads and battery into a single 4-year cartridge, simplifying the maintenance calendar for small congregations.

Q

Do you offer CPR training for our volunteer team?

Yes. Total AEDs partners with AHA and Red Cross-aligned training providers for Heartsaver, BLS, and CPR/AED certification courses. We can arrange on-site training at your church or refer your team to local certified instructors. Browse our training products page for AED trainers and CPR manikins for ongoing in-house practice.
