First Aid Kits

A traditional first aid kit handles cuts, scrapes, and minor burns. The first aid kits stocked by Total AEDs go further, much further, with the ZOLL Mobilize Rescue Systems, the only interactive trauma kit category designed to walk untrained bystanders through life-threatening medical emergencies in real time. Each Mobilize kit pairs OSHA-compliant first aid supplies and trauma supplies with an integrated tablet running the Mobilize Rescue app, an interactive guide that uses AHA, TECC, and American College of Surgeons protocols to help any bystander manage severe bleeding, cardiac arrest, seizures, choking, chest trauma, hypothermia, fractures, allergic reactions, and burns while EMS is en route. Available in Comprehensive, Mobile, Compact, and Training configurations to fit homes, offices, schools, churches, fleets, athletic programs, and high-risk industrial workplaces. Free standard shipping is available on orders $149+ within the contiguous U.S.

Modern emergencies need modern kits

Mobilize Rescue Systems combine ANSI-compliant trauma supplies with a tablet-based rescue app that guides any bystander through the rescue in real time.

Shop first aid kits

Why a modern first aid kit is different

The basic first aid kit was invented in 1888 for railroad workers. The injuries it was built for are still common today, but they are no longer the injuries that kill people. Modern emergency medicine has shifted toward two categories that traditional kits do not cover well.

Traditional first aid kit covers

  • Scraped knees and cuts
  • Minor burns and blisters
  • Splinters and eye irritation
  • Sprains and minor bruising
  • Adhesive bandages and antiseptic

What kills people that kits miss

  • Uncontrolled hemorrhage (leading preventable prehospital death)
  • Chest trauma and tension pneumothorax
  • Sudden cardiac arrest (350,000 U.S. deaths/year outside hospitals)
  • No tourniquets, hemostatic dressings, or chest seals in standard kits
  • No step-by-step guidance for untrained bystanders
Mobilize Rescue Systems were designed specifically for this gap. They contain the trauma supplies modern emergency response requires (tourniquets, hemostatic dressings, chest seals, pressure dressings, splints) and pair them with a tablet-based app that gives any layperson step-by-step instructions on exactly which item to grab and how to use it.

How the Mobilize Rescue System works

Most first aid kits are organized by category (bandages here, antiseptics there). Mobilize kits are organized by emergency. Every supply is color-coded and labeled with an alpha-numeric ID. The integrated tablet asks the bystander yes/no questions and directs them to the exact item by color and number.

1
Open the kit and power on the tablet

The Mobilize Rescue app launches automatically. No login, no setup required.

2
Select the emergency or describe symptoms

Interactive yes/no prompts (Are they conscious? Are they breathing? Where is the bleeding?) narrow the response to the specific situation.

3
The app directs to the exact item

Example: "Grab item B3." Every supply is color-coded and alpha-numerically labeled inside the kit. No guessing, no searching.Color-coded + labeled

4
On-screen video and written instructions

The app shows how to apply the tourniquet, dressing, or chest seal with step-by-step video and written coaching, including timing intervals and vital-sign checks.

5
Handoff summary generated for EMS

After EMS arrival, the app generates a time-stamped summary of every action the bystander took, shared directly with responding paramedics for continuity of care.

This is the only first aid kit system in the U.S. that integrates AHA, TECC, and American College of Surgeons protocols directly into the kit itself.

How to choose the right first aid kit

Four decisions narrow the entire first aid kit category to the right configuration for your environment.

1Identify your hazard profile

Low-risk (Class A)

Offices, retail, schools, churches. Class A handles everyday injuries. Mobilize Compact extends to severe bleeding and trauma scenarios.

High-risk (Class B)

Manufacturing, construction, warehouses, athletic facilities. Class B is the ANSI minimum. Mobilize Comprehensive or Mobile goes well beyond.

Mass-gathering venues

Stadiums, large schools, government buildings, transit hubs. Mobilize Comprehensive with four internal utility kits is the only kit that supports multi-victim response.

2Match the container type to the setting

Type I (stationary/indoor)

Wall cabinets and mounted boxes for break rooms and fixed indoor locations.

Type II (portable/indoor)

Briefcase-style soft cases for office floors and indoor mobile use.

Type III (indoor or outdoor)

Rugged soft cases for vehicles, classrooms, and indoor-to-outdoor transitions.

Type IV (rugged/outdoor)

Water-resistant, corrosion-resistant, impact-resistant. The Mobilize Comprehensive hard case meets Type IV performance standards.

3Decide ANSI Class A or Class B

4Stack with an AED, not replace

Mobilize kit covers trauma

Tourniquets, hemostatic dressings, chest seals, splints, and tablet guidance for bleeding, broken bones, chest trauma, and more.

AED covers cardiac arrest

Sudden cardiac arrest still requires a defibrillator. The complete preparedness package pairs a Mobilize kit with an AED, wall cabinet, signage, and AED rescue kit.

First aid kits by use case

Different environments call for different kit configurations. Common buyer profiles for each facility type.

Home

Mobilize Compact fits in a closet, garage, or vehicle. Covers kitchen accidents, power-tool incidents, and automotive emergencies. Pair with a home AED for households with at-risk family members.

Business and offices

Mobilize Compact per floor or department, plus one Comprehensive at a central safety hub. Larger offices (500+ employees) deploy multiple Compacts with a single Comprehensive at the safety station.

Schools

Mobilize Comprehensive in the nurse's office plus Mobilize Compact kits in the gym, athletic trainer's bag, and main office. Standard K-12 configuration.

Churches and places of worship

Mobilize Compact in the narthex paired with an AED church value package covers most small-to-medium churches. Multi-campus ministries should add a Comprehensive at the central safety team location.

Cars, fleets, and work trucks

Mobilize Compact in military-grade nylon fits under a vehicle seat or in a fleet cab. Right for construction crews, utility companies, delivery fleets, and rideshare drivers.

Industrial and construction

ANSI Class B equivalent or better required. Mobilize Comprehensive (or Mobile for mobile crews) covers Class B requirements plus the trauma response gap that Class B alone does not fully address.

Athletic programs and sports

Athletic trainers prefer the Mobile backpack configuration so the kit travels to the field, court, or pool with the team. Pair with an AED and pediatric pads for full youth sports coverage.

ANSI Z308.1-2021 and OSHA compliance quick reference

OSHA references ANSI Z308.1 in 29 CFR 1910.151 (general industry) and 29 CFR 1926.50 (construction) as the minimum first aid kit standard. ANSI Z308.1-2021 (effective October 15, 2022) is the current version. The Mobilize Comprehensive Trauma Kit exceeds the ANSI Class B Type IV minimum and adds STOP THE BLEED supplies, an integrated tablet, and TECC-aligned trauma protocols.

First aid kit maintenance and inspection

A first aid kit is only useful if its contents are in date and complete. ANSI Z308.1-2021 specifies that kits should be inspected frequently and any supply beyond its expiration date replaced immediately.

Monthly

Visual check

  • Verify the kit is in place and the seal is intact
  • Sign the inspection tag and record the date

Quarterly

Full inventory check

  • Open the kit and verify all supplies are present
  • Check expiration dates on sterile items, antiseptics, gloves, and medications
  • Replace any expired item immediately

Annually

Full restock

  • Replace all expired or used supplies
  • Replace Mobilize tablet battery if applicable
  • Confirm ANSI Z308.1-2021 compliance with current kit contents

After every use

Immediate restock

  • Replace every consumable that was opened or deployed, even partially
  • Kit must be at full readiness before it returns to the wall

Most sterile items carry 3 to 5-year expiration dates from manufacture. Tourniquets and hemostatic dressings typically carry 5-year service lives. Always check the printed date on each item rather than relying on the purchase date.

Frequently asked questions about first aid kits

Q

Is this kit OSHA and ANSI compliant for a 50-person office?

Yes. The Mobilize Comprehensive and Mobile kits exceed the ANSI Z308.1-2021 Class B Type IV requirements. ANSI does not set first aid kit count purely by employee number. The standard recommends placing supplies within 3 to 4 minutes of any work area, so multi-floor or multi-building 50-person offices may need more than one kit.

Q

How long do the sterile items stay valid before they expire?

Most sterile bandages, dressings, antiseptic wipes, and burn gels carry a 3 to 5-year shelf life from manufacture, with the printed expiration date on each individual item. Tourniquets, hemostatic dressings (like QuikClot), and chest seals typically carry 5-year service lives. Inspect the kit quarterly and replace any expired item immediately.

Q

Is the carrying case rugged enough to withstand being dropped or getting wet?

The Mobilize Comprehensive uses a hard, water-resistant carry case rated to ANSI Z308.1 Type IV performance. The Mobilize Mobile uses a sturdy nylon backpack that handles impact and weather better than a typical first aid box. The Mobilize Compact uses military-grade nylon. All three survive normal field use; the Comprehensive case is the most rugged for harsh environments.

Q

Does this kit include clear instructions for people with no medical training?

Yes, and Mobilize goes further than any other first aid kit on the market. The Comprehensive and Mobile kits include an integrated tablet running the Mobilize Rescue app, which provides interactive yes/no diagnostic questions, real-time step-by-step instructions, on-screen video, and a time-stamped EMS handoff summary. The Compact kit pairs with a phone-based version of the same app via multi-user license.

Q

Are the bandages latex-free?

Yes. All Mobilize Rescue Systems and ANSI Z308.1-2021 compliant kits sold by Total AEDs use latex-free nitrile gloves and latex-free adhesive bandages. Roughly 1 in 100 adults has a latex allergy, making latex-free the modern standard for any public-access first aid kit.

Q

What's the difference between a first aid kit and a Mobilize Rescue System?

A traditional first aid kit handles minor injuries: cuts, scrapes, sprains, minor burns. A Mobilize Rescue System adds trauma supplies (tourniquets, hemostatic dressings, chest seals, splints) for life-threatening emergencies and pairs them with a tablet-based app that walks an untrained bystander through the rescue in real time. Mobilize is designed for the gap between minor first aid and full EMS arrival.

Q

Do I need an AED if I have a Mobilize Rescue Kit?

Yes. The Mobilize Rescue System contains trauma and bleeding-control supplies plus guidance for cardiac arrest response, but it does not include a defibrillator. Sudden cardiac arrest still requires an AED to deliver the shock. The most prepared facilities pair a Mobilize kit with an AED, wall cabinet, signage, and AED rescue kit.

Q

Can the Mobilize Rescue app work without internet?

Yes. The Mobilize Rescue app is preloaded onto the integrated tablet and runs fully offline. The kit does not need Wi-Fi or cellular service to function. After-rescue summary data can be exported when the tablet reconnects to a network.

Q

Are there bulk discounts for schools, fleets, or multi-site businesses?

Yes. Total AEDs offers volume pricing for any organization purchasing 3 or more Mobilize kits, including schools, multi-campus ministries, fleet operators, manufacturing chains, and franchise networks. Call (855) 286-6384 with your kit count for a complete preparedness package quote.

Q

Where should first aid kits be placed in the workplace?

ANSI Z308.1-2021 recommends placing first aid supplies within 3 to 4 minutes of any work area, with proximity weighted by hazard rather than employee count. Common placements: break rooms, reception desks, near machinery and loading docks, in vehicles, at security checkpoints, in athletic facilities, and near AED wall cabinets so trauma and cardiac response co-locate.
