The real choice is between video guidance and battery life, and they pull in opposite directions.

Defibtech Lifeline DDU-100

Semi-automatic, voice-guided, no screen. A physical SHOCK button flashes when the device advises a shock, and the rescuer presses it.

Two battery options: a 5-year standard pack rated for 125 shocks or 8 hours, or an optional 7-year high-capacity pack rated for 300 shocks or 16 hours.

Defibtech Lifeline VIEW Video guidance

The first and only AED with full-motion color video. Every step plays as a short video clip rather than voice instructions alone.

It also adds real-time CPR feedback on both compression depth and rate, plus Real-Time Protocol Selection to switch between compression-only and compression-plus-breathing CPR without restarting.

The trade-off most comparisons skip

The VIEW's battery is rated 4 years. That is shorter than the standard Lifeline's 5-year default, and much shorter than its optional 7-year pack. The color screen draws more power.

Over a decade, the VIEW needs more battery replacements than the simpler model, not fewer. Factor that into total cost, not just the sticker price.

Semi-automatic or fully automatic

Defibtech builds the Lifeline in two shock-delivery variants. The semi-automatic DDU-100 has a SHOCK button the rescuer presses when prompted.

The fully automatic Lifeline AUTO, model DDU-120, removes that decision entirely. In place of the button sits a SHOCK Required Indicator, and the device delivers the shock itself.

Critical for fully automatic units

On the DDU-120, do not touch the patient while the SHOCK Required Indicator is flashing. That indicator means the unit has charged and is about to deliver a shock without any button press.

A second battery you may not expect

Defibtech units use a separate 9V lithium battery dedicated to periodic self-check functions, independent of the main battery pack.

Most AED brands do not have this. Check your user manual for the replacement interval, and keep a spare Defibtech 9V lithium self-check battery on hand.

Field upgradable when guidelines change

Defibtech's own specification sheet states Lifeline AEDs can be upgraded on-site when CPR guidelines change, rather than being returned to the manufacturer.

For a device with an 8-year warranty, that matters. Resuscitation guidelines are periodically revised, and a unit that cannot be updated ages faster than one that can.

Pads, batteries, and replacement parts

Defibtech uses different pads for each platform. The standard Lifeline takes adult pad model DDP-100, and the VIEW uses its own dedicated pad set.

For patients under 8 years old or under 55 lbs, use pediatric pads, model DDP-200P on the standard platform.
