What is an AED trainer?

An AED trainer is a non-shocking replica of a real automated external defibrillator. It looks and sounds exactly like the live AED it represents, walking the rescuer through the same voice prompts, pad placement instructions, rhythm-analysis pauses, and simulated shock delivery. The critical difference is that an AED trainer cannot deliver an actual electrical shock, making it completely safe for repeated hands-on practice on manikins and training partners.

Trainers are required equipment for AHA Heartsaver, Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED, BLS, ACLS, and OSHA workplace safety courses, and they are the standard tool used by CPR and AED instructors, training centers, schools, fire departments, EMS agencies, and corporate safety teams.

AED trainer vs. real AED, what's the difference?

The two devices look identical from the outside, but they serve very different purposes. Understanding the difference is the first step to building a safe, effective training program.

Real AED

  • FDA-approved medical device
  • Analyzes heart rhythm and delivers live biphasic shock
  • Uses high-voltage capacitor and live defibrillation pads
  • Requires a medical prescription in most U.S. states
  • For emergency deployment only, not for practice
  • Higher cost per unit

AED Trainer

  • Non-shocking training replica, not a medical device
  • Runs pre-programmed rescue scenarios via remote or internal programming
  • No high-voltage circuitry, no live analysis algorithm
  • Uses low-adhesive reusable training electrodes
  • No prescription required, any individual or organization may purchase
  • Fraction of the cost of a real AED
A real AED saves a life. An AED trainer teaches the skill that lets someone save a life.

How to choose the right AED trainer

The right AED training unit depends on three decisions: which AED model your students will encounter in the field, how many scenarios you want to simulate, and how interactive your sessions need to be.

1Match the trainer to the real AED in use

Brand-matched trainer

Always train on the same brand and model deployed in the student's environment. Muscle memory matters during a real cardiac arrest. Brand-matched trainers produce far better outcomes for hands-on certification.

Generic trainer

Acceptable for general AED awareness courses, community classes, and scout troops where students will encounter multiple brands. Prestan, Laerdal, and WNL Practi-Trainer are the most widely used generic units.

2Choose single-scenario or multi-scenario

Single-scenario trainers

Play one fixed rescue sequence (typically shockable rhythm followed by CPR cycles). Inexpensive, durable, ideal for community classes, HR onboarding, and refresher sessions.

Multi-scenario trainers

Store 4 to 8 programmed rescues including shockable, non-shockable, pad-placement errors, and pediatric scenarios. Right for AHA-certified instructors, fire and EMS academies, and high-volume certification programs.

3Decide whether you need a remote

Remote-controlled trainer

Lets the instructor change scenarios, simulate device errors, or force "no shock advised" mid-rescue without the student seeing. Dramatically improves realism. One instructor can run multiple stations simultaneously.

Stand-alone trainer

Simpler, cheaper, and well-suited to self-paced learning, online-blended courses, and refresher training where scenario variety is less critical.

4Account for replacement pads and batteries

Standard AA or 9V batteries

Most trainers run on consumer batteries available at any retail store. Low per-unit cost and easy to replace mid-session if needed.

Proprietary rechargeable packs

Defibtech, ZOLL, and Cardiac Science professional trainers use proprietary rechargeable packs. Higher upfront cost but fewer mid-session battery changes. Factor replacement cycle into your annual budget.

Shop AED trainers by brand

Total AEDs stocks training units from every major FDA-approved AED manufacturer plus the most-used third-party brands. Match your trainer to the live AED your learners will encounter on the job.

ZOLL AED trainers

For programs deploying ZOLL devices. Available: ZOLL AED Plus Trainer 2 (full Real CPR Help simulation), ZOLL AED 3 Trainer with CPR Uni-padz, and the ZOLL Simulator for AED Plus, AED Pro, and AED 3.

Cardiac Science AED trainers

For Powerheart programs. We stock the Powerheart G5 AED Trainer, Powerheart G3 Simulator, and the Full-Size AED Trainer for general-purpose practice.

HeartSine AED trainers

For Samaritan PAD programs. HeartSine Samaritan PAD 350P/360P Trainer with Remote and the 450P Trainer with Remote replicate the single-button design and include CPR rate-advisor simulation on the 450P.

Defibtech AED trainers

For Defibtech Lifeline programs. The Stand Alone Training AED runs preset sequences, while the Lifeline VIEW AED Trainer adds the full-color video display that mirrors the live VIEW unit.

Physio-Control AED trainers

For LIFEPAK programs including EMS, fire, and large workplace deployments. We carry the LIFEPAK 1000 Training System and the LIFEPAK CR2 AED Demo Unit.

Universal and generic AED trainers

For general AED awareness or multi-brand programs. Prestan AED UltraTrainer, Prestan Professional AED Trainer, WNL AED Practi-Trainer, and Laerdal AED Trainer 3 are widely used across community CPR classes, schools, and corporate safety programs.

AED trainer accessories

Trainers are only the start. Total AEDs also carries the consumables and add-ons that keep your training program running session after session.

How do you use an AED training device?

A typical AED trainer practice cycle mirrors the real-world rescue protocol exactly. Understanding the flow helps both new instructors and learners get the most out of every session.

1

Instructor selects a scenario

Choose shockable rhythm, non-shockable rhythm, pediatric, or error condition via the trainer itself or the remote control.

2

Student powers on the trainer

Using the same button or lid-open trigger as the live AED, building identical muscle memory from the first action.

3

Voice prompts guide pad placement

The trainer walks the student through exposing the chest and applying the training pads to the manikin in the indicated positions.

4

Trainer simulates rhythm analysis

The unit announces "Stand clear, analyzing now" and pauses, mirroring the rhythm-analysis pause of the live AED.

5

Simulated shock delivery

If the scenario calls for it, the trainer announces "Shock advised." The student presses the simulated shock button, or on fully automatic models the trainer delivers the simulated shock automatically.

6

CPR coaching cycle

The trainer guides the student through a CPR cycle, often with a metronome and compression depth feedback on advanced models.

7

Scenario repeats or changes

The cycle repeats until the scenario completes, or the instructor switches to a different condition via remote for the next learner.

8
Training pads are reset

Pads are removed, returned to their low-adhesive backing, and reused for the next student. No replacement needed until the backing wears out after several hundred uses.

Frequently asked questions about AED trainers

Q

What is an AED trainer used for?

An AED trainer is used to teach proper automated external defibrillator operation in CPR and first aid courses without delivering a real shock. Instructors use trainers to walk students through pad placement, voice-prompt response, CPR cycles, and shock delivery so learners build muscle memory on the same equipment they would use during an actual sudden cardiac arrest.

Q

What is the difference between a training AED and a real AED?

A real AED contains a high-voltage capacitor and analysis algorithm that can deliver a life-saving shock during cardiac arrest. A training AED has no shock-delivery circuitry and runs pre-programmed scenarios for safe repeated practice. Real AEDs are FDA-approved medical devices that often require a prescription, while AED trainers do not.

Q

How do you use an AED training device?

Power on the trainer, follow the simulated voice prompts to apply the training pads to the manikin, allow the trainer to analyze the rhythm, deliver a simulated shock if advised, then perform CPR cycles as guided. Multi-scenario units let the instructor change conditions remotely between students for varied practice.

Q

Can an AED trainer shock a person?

No. AED trainers are intentionally built without high-voltage circuitry, capacitors, or live defibrillation electrodes. They cannot deliver an electrical shock and are completely safe for hands-on practice on manikins and live training partners.

Q

Are AED trainer pads reusable?

Yes. Training pads use a low-adhesive backing designed for repeated removal and reapplication. Most pads last for several hundred student uses before the backing wears out. Replacement training pads are sold separately and are typically brand-specific.

Q

What's the best AED trainer for CPR instructors?

The best trainer matches the live AED your students will encounter on the job. For mixed-brand teaching, the Prestan AED UltraTrainer and Prestan Professional AED Trainer are the most popular generic units. For brand-specific certification, choose the trainer that matches the real device, such as the ZOLL AED Plus Trainer 2 or the Philips HeartStart OnSite Trainer.

Q

Do AED trainers come with a remote control?

Some do, some do not. Single-scenario trainers typically have no remote and run one fixed rescue sequence. Professional and multi-scenario trainers usually include a remote so the instructor can switch scenarios mid-course without the student seeing the input.

Q

How much does an AED trainer cost?

Generic AED trainers start around $100 to $200 (Prestan, WNL Practi-Trainer). Brand-specific single-scenario trainers run roughly $400 to $600 (ZOLL AED Plus Trainer 2, Cardiac Science Powerheart G5 Trainer, HeartSine Samaritan PAD Trainer). Premium multi-scenario simulators with remotes run $800 to $1,900 (Defibtech Lifeline VIEW Trainer, ZOLL AED 3 Trainer, Physio-Control LIFEPAK 1000 Training System).

Q

Do I need a prescription to buy an AED trainer?

No. AED trainers are not regulated medical devices because they cannot deliver a shock. Any instructor, school, business, or private individual can purchase a trainer without a prescription or medical authorization.
