Unlike a standard AED electrode that only carries the defibrillation shock, CPR-D-padz are a genuine one-piece defibrillation and CPR system: a compression, depth, and rate sensor is built into the pad itself, so the moment the pads are placed on a patient's chest, the AED is simultaneously monitoring cardiac rhythm and CPR quality.

ZOLL's Real CPR Help feedback depends on data from the sensor built into CPR-D-padz. Inadequate compression rate and depth are among the most common CPR quality problems, even among trained rescuers under stress. Installing Replacement Pads and Rescue Deployment

ZOLL designed the AED Plus electrode swap to take well under a minute, and designed the pad itself so the expiration date can be checked without ever opening the case. Both matter for a consumable most programs will replace without incident, years apart, long after the original installation is forgotten.

Check the expiration date without opening the lid. The date is printed on the convenience tab that runs through a slit in the top of the AED Plus lid, specifically so a monthly visual check does not require opening the case. Confirm this date at every inspection.
Open the AED Plus lid to begin the swap. Once you have confirmed replacement is needed, pop the lid off the unit to access the electrode cable and the old pad package.
Disconnect the old electrode cable. Pull up on the cable connector to release the expired or used pad set from the AED.
Connect the new CPR-D-padz cable. Plug the replacement set's cable into the AED Plus. Per ZOLL's own warning, the electrode cable must stay connected to the unit at all times; the AED Plus will issue a PLUG IN CABLE prompt if it is not.
Route the convenience tab back through the lid slit. This step is what keeps next month's expiration check a lid-closed, five-second glance instead of a full case opening. It can take a try or two to seat correctly; that is normal.
Close the lid and confirm the AED Plus completes its self-test. The AED Plus reads which electrode type is connected and will issue an Adult Pads voice prompt once it recognizes the new CPR-D-padz.
During a rescue: remove all clothing covering the patient's chest and ensure it is dry. Wet or covered skin degrades both pad adhesion and sensor accuracy. Use the included wet and dry wipes if needed.
Tear open the package and unfold the inner package to expose the electrodes. Placement graphics are printed directly on the package.
Place the electrodes per the printed graphics, angling around any visible implanted device. If the patient has a visible implanted pacemaker or defibrillator near the upper right chest, angle the electrode placement slightly to avoid placing a pad directly over the device rather than delaying the rescue to reposition entirely.
Confirm the CPR sensor maintains contact and follow the AED Plus prompts. Roll the patient onto their back if needed so the sensor and pads seat correctly, then let the AED Plus guide rhythm analysis, shock delivery, and CPR coaching.
After the rescue, order a replacement set immediately. Used pads cannot be reinstalled. Document the deployment in your AED program's incident log and replace the electrode the same day.

Safety, Considerations, and Common Errors

Adult Pads Only CPR-D-padz are not intended for children under 8 years or under 55 lbs (25 kg). ZOLL's own AED Plus documentation states this as a direct warning: do not use adult electrode pads or CPR-D-padz on patients under 8 years old. Stock ZOLL Pedi-padz II for any program that could encounter a pediatric patient.
Electrodes Must Stay Pre-Connected to the AED ZOLL's documentation carries this as a standalone warning: keep the electrode cable connected to the AED Plus unit at all times. An AED with disconnected pads is not rescue-ready regardless of how fresh the pads themselves are, and the unit will not deliver a shock until the cable connection issue is resolved, costing time in an actual emergency.
Check Expiration Monthly Using the Convenience Tab ZOLL built the convenience tab specifically so this check does not require opening the case. Make it a genuine monthly habit rather than an annual one; a 5-year shelf life is long enough that a missed inspection cycle can go unnoticed for a long time before the pads actually expire in storage.
Single Use. Never Reinstall Deployed Pads. Once CPR-D-padz have been applied to a patient, they cannot be reused. Order a replacement set the same day as any deployment so the AED Plus returns to a fully rescue-ready state.
Ensure the Patient's Chest Is Dry Before Placement ZOLL's instructions call for a dry chest surface before applying the electrodes. Moisture degrades both pad adhesion and the accuracy of the compression sensor feeding Real CPR Help. The included wet and dry wipes exist specifically to solve this in the field; use them rather than placing pads on a wet or sweaty chest.
Angle Pad Placement Around Implanted Devices If the patient has a visible implanted pacemaker or defibrillator in the upper right chest area, angle the electrode placement slightly to avoid positioning a pad directly over the device rather than delaying the rescue. Do not stop to search for or confirm a device that is not visibly apparent.
Do Not Use Expired Electrodes ZOLL's own AED 3 documentation states plainly not to use defibrillation pads that have passed their expiration date. This applies equally to the AED Plus and AED Pro platforms. A 5-year shelf life is generous, not indefinite; verify the date rather than assuming it based on how long the AED has been in service.
