The Physio-Control LIFEPAK CR2 AED Defibrillator is the most technologically advanced public-access AED currently sold in the United States. Where the professional LIFEPAK 1000 targets BLS-trained first responders, the CR2 is built for the everyday rescuer in workplaces, schools, gyms, and public venues. cprINSIGHT: The Only AED That Lets You Keep Compressing

Every other AED forces the rescuer to stop CPR while the device analyzes the patient's heart rhythm, creating a hands-off pause that lasts 5 to 15 seconds per cycle. The LIFEPAK CR2 is the only AED that analyzes the rhythm during chest compressions, so the rescuer never has to stop. If a shockable rhythm is detected, the CR2 prompts the rescuer to clear and deliver the shock. If no shock is needed, the CR2 keeps the rescuer compressing without any pause at all. In an AED comparison study, lay responders using the CR2 delivered the highest overall CPR quality of any AED tested.

Universal Pads: One Pad Set for Adults and Children

Every other AED requires a separate pediatric pad cartridge (or for the Philips FRx, a separate Pediatric Key) to treat children under 8 or under 55 pounds. The CR2 uses a single set of QUIK-STEP universal pads for both adults and pediatric patients. For a pediatric rescue, the rescuer simply presses the Child Mode button on the device, which attenuates shock energy automatically. This eliminates a second pad SKU from your inventory and removes the risk of grabbing the wrong cartridge in an emergency.

Installation and Placement

The CR2 is a permanent-install public-access AED designed for visible wall mounting in workplaces, schools, gyms, retail, churches, and community spaces. Placement decisions drive survival outcomes more than any AED feature: every minute of delay between collapse and defibrillation reduces survival probability by approximately 10 percent.

Position for 90-second access. Place the AED so any responder in the building can reach it, deploy it on the patient, and deliver the first shock within three minutes. This typically means one AED per 60 to 90 seconds of round-trip walking distance, with additional units for multi-floor or multi-wing buildings.
Mount the cabinet at ADA-compliant height. Under the 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design, the operable handle should sit no higher than 48 inches above the finished floor for unobstructed forward reach, or 54 inches for side reach. The CR2's 4.5-lb weight works with any cabinet in our AED wall cabinets selection.
Avoid corridor protrusion violations. Objects mounted between 27 and 80 inches above the finished floor cannot protrude more than 4 inches into walkways. In narrow corridors, use semi-recessed or recessed cabinets rather than surface-mounted units.
Set up WiFi connectivity if applicable. If you ordered a WiFi-enabled CR2 variant, register the device with LIFELINKcentral during initial setup. The platform requires a one-time wireless network configuration, after which it monitors device readiness automatically. Basic LIFELINKcentral access is free with WiFi units.
Post AED signage. Mount an ISO 7010 E010 AED sign (white heart and lightning bolt on green) directly above or beside the cabinet, plus a perpendicular flag sign at 84 to 96 inches above the floor for distance visibility.
Register and train responders. Register the AED with Physio-Control to activate the full 8-year warranty, your local EMS agency (required in many states), and your facility's emergency response team. CPR/AED training is recommended for designated responders. While the CR2 is designed to work without training, trained responders deploy it faster.
Perform monthly inspections. Visual check of the green Ready indicator, battery and pad expiration dates, and external case integrity. Log each inspection on the included AED Check Tag. Most state PAD program rules require documented monthly inspections. WiFi variants reduce manual inspection burden through LIFELINKcentral automated monitoring.

Safety and Considerations

Prescription Required The CR2 is FDA-classified Class III medical device and is designated prescription-use only. Unlike the Philips HeartStart OnSite or HeartSine 350P (both OTC-cleared), the CR2 requires a physician's prescription for purchase. Total AEDs supplies the prescription with every order at no additional cost. The prescription names the medical director of record for the AED program.
The AED Will Only Shock When Necessary cprINSIGHT analysis examines the patient's heart rhythm during CPR and will only authorize a shock if it detects ventricular fibrillation or pulseless ventricular tachycardia. If the rhythm is not shockable, the device will not deliver a shock even if the rescuer presses the shock button. This safety feature is identical to other modern AEDs and is designed to protect bystanders who may be uncertain about applying the device.
Universal Pads Still Require Correct Mode Selection While the QUIK-STEP pads work for both adults and children, the rescuer must press the Child Mode button before applying pads to a child under 8 years or under 55 pounds. Without the Child Mode button activated, the CR2 will deliver adult-energy shocks (up to 360 J), which is inappropriate for pediatric patients. Train responders to identify pediatric patients and activate Child Mode as part of pad placement.
cprINSIGHT Does Not Replace Rescuer Judgment cprINSIGHT analyzes the heart rhythm during compressions, which reduces hands-off time but does not replace the rescuer's judgment about when to start CPR or when to stop and clear for a shock. Follow the CR2's voice prompts exactly. Stop compressions only when the AED instructs you to stand clear for shock delivery.
WiFi Configurations Need Working Network Coverage WiFi-enabled CR2 units require a working wireless network within range of the AED to upload event data and respond to LIFELINKcentral monitoring. If the WiFi network goes down, the AED still functions fully as a defibrillator (cprINSIGHT and all rescue features work without WiFi), but remote monitoring features will be unavailable until network connectivity is restored. The USB variants do not require any network connection.
Pad Replacement After Use QUIK-STEP electrode pads are single-use. After any actual rescue attempt (whether the AED delivered a shock or not), the pads must be replaced before the AED is returned to standby. Keep a spare pad set on hand for high-use environments. The included QUIK-STEP universal Adult/Child Electrode Pads carry a 4-year shelf life from manufacture date.
