Why OEM Philips accessories are non-negotiable

Third-party and aftermarket pads and batteries for Philips HeartStart AEDs are widely sold online at lower prices. The hidden cost is significant.

Risks of using non-OEM Philips accessories

Warranty void. Philips has explicitly stated that using a non-OEM battery in any HeartStart AED at any point during the device's service life voids the manufacturer warranty, including all future claims even after a genuine battery is reinstalled.
FDA compliance gap. Philips HeartStart SMART Pads and the M5070A battery are FDA-cleared as a matched system. Third-party pads and batteries have not been cleared for use with the HeartStart platform and may not deliver accurate shock energy or reliable self-test results.
Self-test failure. The HeartStart SMART Pad uses embedded sensing technology to report pad status and connectivity to the AED's readiness system. Non-SMART pads cannot communicate with the AED, meaning the "Ready" indicator may show green even when the device is not rescue-ready.
Medical-grade adhesive matters. Philips SMART Pads use a specific medical-grade conductive adhesive formulated for the HeartStart waveform. Generic gel adhesives have different impedance characteristics and can affect shock delivery.

When to replace Philips AED accessories

Missing an expiration date is one of the most common AED compliance failures. Use this replacement schedule and store it with your AED inspection log.

Adult and pediatric pads

Replace every 2 years from manufacture date, or immediately after any rescue where a shock was delivered. Expiration date is printed on the pad packaging.

M5071A, 989803139261, M5072A — all follow the 2-year rule.

M5070A battery

Replace 4 years after the date you install it into the AED. The date printed on the battery label is the "Install Before" date, not an expiration date. Record your installation date in the inspection log immediately.

The label date is NOT an expiration date. Track from installation, not manufacture.

Self-test alerts

The Philips HeartStart runs daily self-tests. If the AED chirps or beeps, press the blue "i" button. The AED will verbally tell you what is wrong, for example "Replace Battery" or "Pads Cartridge Damaged." Do not ignore a chirping HeartStart.

Full restock tip: if your battery is 4 years old, your pads are almost certainly expired too. Order both together.

How long does the Philips M5070A battery last?

The M5070A has a shelf life of at least 5 years from manufacture before installation, shown as an "Install Before" date on the battery label. After installation, it lasts approximately 4 years in standby mode with a minimum capacity of 200 shocks or 4 hours of operating time. It is non-rechargeable and must be properly disposed of as lithium battery waste when depleted.

Is the M5070A battery the same for both the OnSite and FRx?

Yes. The M5070A is the universal battery for both the HeartStart OnSite (HS1) and the HeartStart FRx. One part number covers both devices, which simplifies ordering for organizations that run both models.
